  1. I've spent quite a bit of time in Nashville and Middle Tennessee. It really is a great place!
  2. Only about the offer. I don't think they ever interview.
  3. I got a call last Friday from the DGS and have gotten the official letter from the dean. I already knew I'd go if accepted, so it is an easy decision for me!
  4. Hello future Commodores. Thought I'd start a place for us to meet and greet!
  5. Scrabble, did you not receive funding? The website says everyone does: "All students admitted to the PhD program are offered funding, which includes an 12-month stipend ($21,250 in 2010-2011), a full tuition waiver, and student health insurance. Students must pay their own student activity fee (about $250 annually). If students make good progress in the program, funding typically continues for five years. Outstanding applicants may also be eligible for departmental, College of Arts and Science, or University fellowships that supplement the standard stipend. (The department nominates outstanding applicants for these awards; there is no separate application process.)"
  6. I was accepted at Vandy today! Very excited...especially since it was the only place I applied.
  7. I was the first one to post. As Scrabble2 said, the call was brief, but they gave info on funding and the visit weekend. The DGS called, not any of my POIs.
  8. I definitely understand this. I feel like the south in general has this problem. Unfortunately it is self-perpetuating.
  9. You may want to search JStor and Academic Search Premier for terms like "knowledge class" to find some good sources. I'm sure there is some work on it! Sounds interesting.
  10. On research topics I could not answer. Work, organizations, cities, economic soc, and culture were omitted.
  11. I was just planning to keep my job if I am not accepted, but today I was invited to be a TA/RA for the next year in Mexico with one of my favorite professors. I can't decide if two years coordinating a nonprofit/scholarship program at my alma mater is better than doing that for a year or teaching/researching in Mexico would be better on my app next year. Advice from the masses?
  12. YESSSSSSS!!! I want to know now. I think.
  13. I also applied to only one. This is where I really want to be, so I will be reapplying next year as well as casting a wider net if I am not accepted this cycle.
  14. I don't think it will necessarily hurt you, but it seems to indicate that there is a lot of grade inflation at your college. I think if the adcomms were concerned, they would see if your recommenders addressed the issue
