  1. I received an e-mail yesterday with a generic letter attached. Fifty applicants for 15 spots... I think that is what made the rejection even worse! Best of luck to you!
  2. Yes, seven! I'm assuming that two are rejections, but I haven't heard anything official, so I am trying to remain optimistic! It sounds like you are having an even crazier time with your thesis than I am with mine! Congrats on a potential first author publication, though! As far as starting, you might as well get your lit. review out of the way. I feel like it takes that longest anyway! I also decided to get my Master's before applying for a PhD program because my undergrad GPA wasn't too spectacular. As far as making us competitive, I feel like it depends on the school. It seems as if having a Master's isn't too big of an advantage since most competitive anthro programs only have PhD track. I'm thinking the positive for us is that it does show we can excel in graduate courses despite our poor ug transcripts!
  3. Your situation sounds similar to mine! My boyfriend has threatened to block the internet from my computer so that I have to work on my thesis! I have to remind him that it won't work because I have so many other ways to access the internet without the computer. Hah! I feel like every week I don't hear anything, the less productive I am for my thesis... It's horrible. And now it's at the point where I don't even want to look at it anymore! My "new" hobby I guess is just looking for jobs in case I don't get accepted this year. More applications. Yay. Anyway, good luck on your thesis and I hope we all hear back soon!
  4. I'm afraid I don't have any answers. I also looked around on the results and internet but couldn't find any information about interviews and the application process for UPenn. However, I feel the exact same way. No interview here, either.
  5. I haven't heard anything either, but I think you're right about not hearing back until late Feb/early March. Also, just an FYI, University of Tennessee is starting their review process at the end of next week!
  6. I'm looking at indicators for behavior and genetic interaction. Right now I'm working on a project that is attempting to trace migration patterns. I've applied to Penn State, UPENN, Tennessee, Ohio State, University of Arizona, and UNLV. What schools did you apply to?
  7. I would say there are a lot of opportunities for physical anthropology in museum settings. Most of my research has been within human skeletal collections that are held in museums. For instance, there are quite a few collections at the Smithsonian, Field Museum in Chicago, Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology at University of Pennsylvania, and at the British Museum. A lot of universities also have osteological collections. I think the limiting factor would be your research interests, not a shortage of collections.
  8. I am applying to a couple bioarch programs! What is your focus?
  9. Has anyone heard from Penn State? Their website says that they interview mid-January but no one has posted anything on the results page. Just curious!
  10. I am so anxious! I've been obsessively checking my e-mail, phone, and this site to see if anyone has heard anything! I know I shouldn't be wasting so much time on waiting, especially when I need to finish my thesis, but I can't help it!
  11. No matter what, you should get your MA at another program. You can go back to UCSB for your Ph.D., but you may find that your research interests have changed and would prefer another program.
  12. This is exactly what my worst nightmare is!!
  13. Haven't looked into Pittsburgh, but the other schools are on my list. Have you looked into Canada or England? They have stronger bioarch programs there.
