  1. hi! what was your GPA if you don't mind me asking?
  2. you beat me to it!
  3. Hey jenjenjen, congratulations! There's a Berkeley thread going on, I am sure people on it would love to hear the details: how did they contact you, your stats, research interests, etc.
  4. I think I am getting a tension headache... and an ulcer... and I kept my cool until now.
  5. i wonder if the sociology-demography joint program is on the same schedule...
  6. what does CCC Sociology mean?
  7. does anyone else feel like they're on the chopping block?
  8. i went through every single program i applied to: "will i be accepted to [name] this year?" magic 8 ball: "my sources say no" no love from the magic 8 ball for me... maybe that's why professors seem a bit kooky.... they just never psychologically recover from the grad school application process...
  9. haha "like" the three posts above
  10. i totally agree with your assessment of the programs. if i weren't so committed to staying on the west coast, i would have applied to all those programs you mentioned. stanford is interesting, because it isn't explicitly migration-focused, but has several people focusing on ethnic/racial conflict and assimilation, as well as a handful of social demographers (it's ranked #14 for population studies). and they just also opened a new population center that i didn't find out until i emailed someone in the dept. i wrote my undergrad thesis on ethnic conflict and demographic change as a key underlying factor, so it ultimately seemed like a good fit.
  11. I am coming from a non-sociology background (but I did major in a social science). From what I've heard from grad students in sociology and from department web pages, they are pretty open to students from other disciplines, especially other social sciences. You should make it clear, though, why you're making the change. Some even recommended playing up my background and saying how it will contribute to my study of sociology: are there particular methods or insights from your current discipline that could be refreshing or useful to sociology? Just my $0.02.
  12. Bay area is a big factor, but I've been looking at Berkeley's program for years. They are very strong in social demography (and immigration/race). Stanford was a more recent discovery, but a very exciting one. Those to whom I have spoken at Stanford assured me that my interests would be great there. We all apply to different places for different reasons
  13. i certainly don't think i am the best of students, but i have a few things going for me. the thing is, friends and grad students suggested to aim high and not bother with places i can't see myself attending. aaaand that's what i did. i know at some point it's luck, so i can be a strong candidate and not get in... we'll see.
  14. Are there any in California that you guys know of?
  15. i saw no point in applying to places i wouldn't want to go. saved me lots of money!
  16. berkeley and stanford (i love the bay area... what can i say! plus, both are excellent schools for my field) immigration, race, social demography starting to fear it was a gamble only applying to two programs...
  17. i haven't received many either. but honestly, many of these professors are using academia.edu also, right? so they know we would get notified... if i knew that people on facebook could see i visited their page, i wouldn't visit it... especially if i already had their CV anyway and would probably not get any additional information from the profile. i wouldn't worry about it too much.
  18. Did anyone apply to Stanford? What are your research interests? Looks like their notifications went out February 5-10 last year. Getting close... very nervous I applied with interesst in race and immigration as well as social demography.
  19. Congrats! SocHope, I saw on another thread that your interests are im/migration and demography. So are mine, actually. Did you apply to the joint programs at PSU and Berkeley or just the sociology depts?
  20. I never took the old version, and am trying to figure out what the "new 1400" would be. Any ideas?
  21. Agh! I just found a typo in my personal history statement: principal instead of principle >_< I am not a victim of homophonic heterographs (that's what they're called, folks), I swear! Freaking out ensues or should I just hope the adcoms don't care too much about this? Has anyone else found typos in their apps after submission? I knew it was a mistake to go back and re-read after pressing send....
  22. So... when people say "decent GPA", what do they mean? What's a decent GPA? What's a good GPA? I had my first admissions nightmare last night. Had a dream that my POI told me that some of the sentences on my application were incomplete. I flipped through my application and discovered that I did leave many sentences unfinished and, for some reason, formatted certain words an letters to be size 56 in the application. I was still an optimist in my dream, though... my POI told me: "We sometimes forgive people who leave sentences unfinished... it's a stressful process."
  23. Thanks for your opinion!
  24. Do you think it's worth creating an academia.edu profile even if i only have an undergrad degree and no publications? I have been out of UG for a few years... so would I call myself and independent researcher? Or would that just be weird?
  25. Should I created an academia account even though I only have an undergrad degree? Will they think it's strange?
