  1. To echo OdiEtAmo, I would also suggest making sure you know your own research backwards and forwards. I got questions about my research from a few years back, in addition to inquiries about my current pursuits and writing sample. Good luck!
  2. I was invited for a Skype interview, and from the initial email, it was not clear who would interview me. So I emailed the DGS, and he was more than happy to disclose which professors would conduct the interview. In my case, I do not think it was perceived as rude or pushy, but I admit that it was a bit of a bold move.
  3. And, I'm not entirely sure that Penn does an interview weekend for Classics. But again, I may be wrong here. I got that notion from browsing previous years' threads on the application season on this forum.
  4. Oh, I'm sorry if that post was ambiguous. I have *not* heard from Penn for Classical Philology, good or bad. One of my friends has, and he is on the wait list for Classics. I have no idea what notifications have been sent out, and grad cafe is strangely silent on the matter!
  5. Congratulations!
  6. I'm in a similar situation. It really is ok to ask? I feel shy to broach the topic... I dont want them to perceive me as pushy.
  7. Is it legal to ask such questions? Aren't schools disallowed to require you to disclose that sort of information? Or am I thinking of something else.... Maybe It's just questions about race, gender expression, family situation, etc. that they cannot broach. Anyone know more definitively than I do?
  8. Yeah, you're probably right. But I think my prospects at *that* school are more promising than another one which is also interviewing me. I asked the DGS how many candidates he invited (8) and how many the program will accept (<5). Plus, all the prospects are coming at the same time. I'm sure that weekend will be stiff competition. (for everyone else, that is. JK!!!).
  9. Since you're already in at a great school, the job market prospects look good for you. So, if you don't get to get your PhD from your number one, maybe you can teach there one day!
  10. And Frostfire, I hope you hear something good soon, too! : )
  11. Hooray Aeneas!!!! SO happy for you. I saw that post on the results survey and I hoped that it was you!
  12. It was a pretty slow week. But one of my schools emailed me on a Saturday, so you never know!
  13. Quick question, y'all. So, if you are invited to "visit," are you essentially already accepted? Let me clarify-- I am invited to visit a program to meet the faculty, familiarize myself with the city, and learn more about the school. The word 'interview' never was mentioned. I got to choose the dates of my visit. And of course, all expenses are paid. What does this mean?
  14. Omnes-- out of curiosity, are y'all applying straight out of undergrad or from MAs and postbaccs? I graduated with my BA in 2011 and I am taking a "gap" year, so to speak. I think the extra time has been good; it afforded me the opportunity to mature as a scholar and polish my apps.
  15. I haven't read Statius, so he might bore me, too. Where all are you waiting to hear from, still?
  16. Latin poetry is my primary research interest. And I'm sure your TA position has helped your app. It's just stiff competition! Hope you hear good news soon -- like tomorrow!
  17. I'm with you. Waiting is tough. What's your area of interest?
  18. No heart attacks here. We hope to be one-day doctors, but not of that sort! #abovemypaygrade
  19. don't feel guilty! #youdeserveit
  20. They're obviously deliberating now, deciding if they should give us 25 k or 30k stipends.
  21. Lol. To which question? #doubleentendre #ineedtostopobsessing
  22. Lol. Is it acceptable to use hash tags on grad cafe?
  23. Does anyone else feel like today is a super lame day on grad cafe? Why are there no notifications!!! #soimpatient
  24. Yeah Columbia! Anyone else?
  25. hooray!! bravo! This is great news!
