  1. what are your career, academic, research goals? are they more in line with stats or OR? which program suits your acad/research goals best? which program will provide you better job prospects (that are in line with your career goals)? - columbia has a great name, and you would most likely get a faculty job lined up for you once you graduate...but do you see yourself teaching OR or doing research in it? which location works best for you? living situation kinda thing.... personally, I would go with Columbia/OR...then again, that might be because I applied there - didnt get in thou
  2. I would say it would depend on YOUR interests/career goals. Which location would suit your career goals? Which program would suit your academic interests?
  3. totally makes sense...now i think on it
  4. wow...if only we had the inside scoop on our ad comms...imagine how it would be, if we had a reality tv show with our ad comm on it...I think it would be interesting to see how they work. what more would we learn about the process?
  5. living free of worry and stress...moving out of my mum's place....moving on with my life...showing off: "where did you get into...I got into..."
  6. dude, that's the best story ever...everyone is all watching tv/chilling, and you go: "hey...." nice. kinda thing I would do.....problem is my acceptance email is somewhere out there (still hasnt been sent yet) lol
  7. What is this? The 'who has got it worst' game? Well I'm in! I got my fifth rejection today. The only upside was that one of the programs wants to consider me for a M.Eng program. But then again, nothing is definite. Plus I have no idea where I will get the money/loan? Can't some school just take pity on us and just accept us? They could simply look at it as community service
  8. outer wall
  9. So I got these two emails today, and they were titled: Your (school name and department name) Decision (School name - not full name as in Food University; just Food) Decision Any guesses which meant what?
  10. Congrats to you...I'm still 'waiting it out' (good luck to me ) You are right though; with an admit in the pocket, everything changes. if you are down 14 (14 rejections) and this is your last school...and some random person posts an acceptance to that school while you are still waiting....idk...i could see how a person may feel the need to vent, curse, swear, drink and a number of other similarly 'respectable' such activities lol i take it that you were usually the last kid to get picked? lol
  11. idk anything about getting accepted (seeing as how I'm yet to receive an offer lol) but I would say it seems you are on the short list (7 out of 10 kinda thing). the prof doesn't want to tell you outright because things might change (u might be no. 8) or they have not yet finished reviewing applications. however he implies that the outcome would be favorable and that left to him/her you should expect an offer. so while you know your chances are wayy higher...nothing is definite yet. bottom line...you are still 'waiting it out' good luck
  12. fabulouness? I really can't help it (sigh) lol

    thnx

  13. It would suck if that happened, but it would show character: you don't give up. Try not to think negatively though, if you can, think optimistically (pity I can hardly think optimistically now lol).
  14. definitely yes. it can't hurt can it? You can simply just forward it to the secretary for the ad comm saying this is new info...idk, word it well...
  15. same here...now I'm always looking out the window for the UPS/FedEx trucks...checking emails all the time...thinking of all the possible outcomes and such...its crazy.
  16. at least YOU have an area! My research is everywhere and nowhere. I am into Operations Research (OR), but all my past research has been in physics (playing with lasers), bio/chem (playing with lasers n microscopes), physics (cosmology - space n weird stuff aka dark matter). the only thing that comes close is math (computational number theory) and computer science (programming - with no point other than to program lol)
  17. true, thank god for the internet. The 'I didn't get it" line can't fly anymore.
  18. Dining Hall (we had those in boarding school - sucky food though
  19. it sucks...this irony...you feel so up/confident and BAM! some grad school knocks you down Good luck to you though
  20. ps...good luck to those of you still in the loop (wait-listed) and congrats to the 'acceptees' (i doubt that's a word lol)
  21. 1:35pm: email from Cornell - Rejected (PhD)....do you want to be considered for M.Eng? [Emailed yes, pls do consider me for that...perhaps I can use that to get a job...work for a couple years and apply for PhD then (and get it...idk)] 2:52pm: email from Columbia - Rejected (PhD)....no offer of MS consideration or anything... I guess today was really the day of reckoning (for Cornell/Columbia applicants)...I just want to be accepted into anything, anywhere at this point. i don't think i care too much whether its a cash cow program or not lol
  22. same thing...i didnt tell my gf that i got rejected by four schools until yesterday when she found out my 'secret' website - thegradcafe - that i always go to and saw my profile and comments....actually she saw only three. I got a fourth this morning....I will let her know about that as soon as I get an acceptance...its will probably most likely, definitely, almost assuredly, practically be emotional lol..i know how it feels...this process is emotionally draining...it takes a lot out of us
  23. That was me Good Luck to you. The only thing I'm praying for now is that i get into Cornell &/Columbia. idk when OR turned out to be my dream thing, but now it is, and I really want to get started on the rest of my life...starting with an admit to Cornell &/Columbia (both great programs).
  24. Well this morning, I got an email from CMU titled as such (or something similar) and I knew it was a decision - the subject of the email clearly stated it. - So here is what I did before opening the email: STEP 1 - I stared at the email for like 30 seconds, without opening it (thank God for email apps that do not show you previews) STEP 2 - I looked through ALL my other (20 odd) emails STEP 3 - I prayed for like 2/3 mins STEP 4 - I got on my knees and thought about my life and how much I needed to get accepted into CMU (Carnegie Mellon Univ) STEP 5 - I got distracted by random unfocused thoughts (I could not concentrate) STEP 6 - I did the only logical thing to do: I opened a chinese fortune cookie STEP 7 - I prayed again (still on my knees) STEP 8 - I got distracted again STEP 9 - I Google'd the person who sent me the email (He works in student services). STEP 10- I prayed some more Then I opened the email...CMU rejected me. After everything I jut did!!! They rejected me??? Have they no respect for what I just went through to open the email??? FYI: Apparently, rejections suck... lol If you did anything odd/weird/interesting when you got an email/letter or other such notification from a graduate school you applied to, or you have a ritual you do before reading said notification, please share.
  25. Got a rejection from CMU this morning...sucked Hoping to God that I hear good news from Cornell & Columbia. I guess we are all waiting to see if tomorrow is the 'rejection friday'. Well I'm definitely NOT looking forward to checking my email tomorrow/this weekend. Perhaps I will get an email on 'acceptance monday' lol - I am tired of getting rejected, it sucks.
