  1. Broadley, the General Linear Model, especially multiple regression, factor analysis, and structural equation modeling. In terms of substantive interest, I'm fascinated my measures of personality such as the Big 5 and how those traits may not be completely orthogonal, thus calling the theory into question. I also have some experience with latent class and mixture models, although I'm not completely sold on those. If I study those, I will mainly be interested in how the number of groups is derived...so more methodological in that sense. I'm not positive what I want to study yet, which I see as a good thing about the Quant field as a whole. As a professor put it, you probably don't even know that what you will study exists yet, since the undergrad Quant experience can only be so broad. How about you?
  2. To all who have been wondering about the money situation...I just got am email from my advisor, confirming that I am getting funded for the next 5 years. Not details on dollar amounts, just the confirmation. Good luck to everyone else who has been wondering! I'm guessing this means that you will all hear soon!
  3. I'm going home to die for awhile...I've had 4 visits in 3 weeks, so I am exhausted! It will be a welcome break.
  4. Hehe, good theory. Maybe Forensics is for you I'm not sure about rejections. This whole process is very strange. Best of luck!
  5. Me too! But one advisor put it nicely...you HAVE to think of yourself first. They will have other candidates next year, but this is your one choice to pick a good school. Try to separate yourself from the personal feelings. It's really hard, though! Everyone is so nice!
  6. Did you interview at UC-Davis? I only ask because I have a friend in Psych who went there this past weekend...
  7. Be obsessive is my advice. I've been doing the application process for over a year and a half now...emailing profs, checking out school websites, reading research, talking to grad students...yeah, the admissions process ate my life.
  8. UNC-Chapel Hill. I cried when I got the acceptance email from them. It was my birthday, too...best birthday present ever!
  9. I was at OSU this past weekend. They told us (Psych students) that they would notify us about funding sometime this week. I know for Psych students, our first year is a 12+1 monthly stipend of $20,000 and it is essentially free money (no TA/RA involved). Beyond that, it is a 9-month salary and I'm not sure of the dollar amount.
  10. I've been pretty successful, so if any of you want to see my SoP, publications, CV, etc. PM me and I'll gladly let you check them out! The grad school application process is long and tedious, so I'd love to do anything to help you guys!
  11. That's what some of mine have been doing. One prof in particular jokes back and forth with profs at two of the other schools I've been accepted at, so they'll sometimes write emails back and forth in front of me. ie "Dear X. You suck. You are wrong" and things like that. ha!
  12. All the schools that I've applied to have asked, and I've been open and honest with them. I was told by my undergraduate advisor that the schools asking was highly unprofessional, but so far it seems as if it's the norm. However, I am going into a really small field, so everyone knows each other and like each other. It's very friendly. I'm not sure about larger fields, though...
  13. GPA: 3.75 from University of Montana GREQ: 720 GREV: 560 (ouch) GREW: 5.0 Four independent studies, 3 publications, teaching experience, research experience...
  14. I don't know about any psych students, but I know they didn't take any into Quant. It's too new. Their faculty members are both fresh out of grad school (they got their Phds in 2008) so they decided to not take Quant students. As for the rest, I think they generally take 7 new students total each year? But maybe this year was different.
  15. Have you visited the programs that you're accepted into and spoken with faculty members? That is of the utmost importance, in my opinion. Make sure you do that. Visit if you can. I actually almost learned the hard way. I got an interview at a school that i was really excited about, but when I got to the school for my visit, it was just all wrong. I'm thankful that I got to visit amd avoided a potentially bad situation.
  16. I am having a freakout moment. My undergrad transcript looks great, except for this semester. I don't know what the enrollment processes are at other universities, but at mine, the first 3 weeks of the semester are kind of a free-for-all. Students can add and drop classes with no repercussions online. After those 3 weeks are up, however, paper add/drop slips are required, and every class that is dropped after 3 weeks is displayed as a "W" on the transcript. I forgot about the deadline and ended up having to use the paper slips to drop 3 courses. Now I have 3 shiny, lovely Ws on my transcript... I've already heard back from every grad school that I applied to. The ones that accepted me aren't going to drop me just because of the Ws, are they? I know this is irrational, but I have heard of schools retracting an admissions offer. I'm just terrified that these Ws will somehow make a difference. Tell me it's not a huge deal. Should I email my potential advisors and explain, or just let it go? I am still taking a full course load with some pretty advanced classes this semester, but I don't want those stupid Ws to overshadow that.
  17. Yay Quant! I applied to: UNC-Chapel Hill University of British Columbia Washington University in St. Louis Arizona State University of Montana (my undergrad institution) Boston College University of Washington Any other Quant people out there?
  18. I got in to UBS MS as well I visited there last week. Great school, great area...it's going to be tough to turn that down if I do!
  19. I got in and have funding, but I haven't decided yet. Their fellowships are great, though...for the first year, I'll get funding but won't have to TA/RA!
  20. Anyone going to UNC-CH? It's my top choice and I'm in, so I'll likely be going there for Quantitative Psychology!
