  1. Amberwaves... Have you made a decision of where you are going?
  2. Congrats SLParanoid... accepted to every school you applied! Made a decision as to where you are going yet?
  3. Has anyone been accepted to UNC-Chapel Hill and decided to go elsewhere? From a curious person on the waitlist! Still hanging on to that thread of hope.
  4. Today is the decision day (with $500 deposit due) that the University of South Carolina gave on the acceptance letter. Just curious of all who got accepted to USC-Columbia, how many are planning to attend? How many got some type of funding? Still waiting on a few schools, waitlisted on one. Very hard decision with $500 at stake and incomplete information.
  5. Totally agree with Trina. The rankings are just one of the many factors to consider when selecting a school. It is probably one of the least important unless you plan on a Phd. However, it is one factor and when a school drops or raises significantly in the ranking, it makes you wonder why and, at least for me, prompts me to do more research. Perhaps they made a change to the program, added new specialties, etc. However, what I believe is most important (besides the mighty $$$) is the fit. Does the school feel right, does their style match your goals (i.e. medical, clinical, research, etc...)? Everybody has their own list of must haves, wants, and likes/ dislikes. The key is finding what suits you and your future goals. One thing my daughter did was to research the professors and see if she could find one that had similar interest to hers. She is very interested in language development among children with ASD. Each school that she applied to had at least one professor who had done research and/or written papers on this subject. This was one of her "must haves".
  6. Link to new U.S. News rankings for Speech Language Pathology. http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-health-schools/pathology-rankings Changes to schools of my interest were: Vanderbilt #5 ==> #3 UNC - Chapel Hill #18 ==> #11 USC - Columbia #60 ==> #35 UGA #46 ==> #52 Only one that dropped in ranking was UGA.
  7. Daughter got accepted to UGA and USC. She is also waitlisted for UNC - Chapel Hill. I know she is interested in research and leans toward the medical SLP schools. Therefore, her top choice is UNC- Chapel Hill. However, since she is waitlisted (and OOS) and may not get in, I was trying to help her research the pros & cons for the other two schools. Please share your views on the SLP programs at University of Georgia and University of South Carolina. Don't really need information on the locations as we are familiar with Athens, GA and Columbia, SC. More interested in the pros and cons of the SLP programs. She has research their web sites but was interested in others opinions; especially if there are any first hand knowlege of the programs. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
  8. Don't know much about UT Austin but GA Tech is a top notch school for engineering. I work for a large engineering/construction company and I have not run into a GA Tech engineeering grad who was not what I call "cream of the crop.
  9. I don't understand the negative reputation points for this post. Are they not legitimate questions? Not everyone has money to burn. Some are in massive dept from undergrad and simply cannot afford the top $$ schools. Research shows that you do not have to attend a top $$ school to be a succesful SLP. So what gives? As Jack Handey says "Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way when you criticize them, you are a mile away and you have their shoes."
  10. The admit letter from UGA stated... "We have offered admission at this time to only a few of you, out of the many applications that we received. Most applicants will be hearing from us at approximately the middle of March. The reason we have offered you admission so early, moreover, is that we have forwarded your name to The Graduate School for a university-wide competition for Graduate Assistantship." So most will get notified from UGA in about a month.
  11. What are the best Speech Language Pathology grad schools for the money? Which school are the most generous in scholarships, grants, assistantships, etc..?
  12. Hopefull, your GRE is not bad. Equivalent to verbal 500 and quant 620 for total of 1120 on old GRE scale. Lot of schools state the lower end is 1000. May want to give it one more shot to see if you can get up in the 1200's to be safe.
  13. Just found this forum and will inform my daughter about it tonight. My daughter plans to get her MS in Speech-Language Pathology (SLP). She is very nervouse because she knows how competitive the field is currently. Her stats are: Attending state university (USC - Columbia, SC) with current GPA of 3.77 - straight A's for last 2 semesters and on track for same this fall. Senior (one semester to go) Undergrad Major/Minor: Psychology/Communication Disorders (university does not offer major in COMD or SLP) GRE score: Verbal Reasoning 161 / Quantitative Reasoning 150 (equivalent to 1250 on old GRE scoring) Related Extracurriculars: - volunteered summer at Center for disabled children (shadowed a therapist) - currently has a job as a line therapist for children with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) - currently assisting professor with research in child language disorder - recently selected as Magellan Scholar - $2500 grant to do research with professor - biased opinion but I believe her SOP is amazing - three strong letters of recommendation from professors Misc info: - most of her pre-college (high school) education was at american schools in other countries (Saudi Arabia, China, Ireland) - Began college with major in Mass Communication/Journalism before discovering SLP. - Her current college offers an MS in SLP but is very selective. They only have 35 slots available per year and you must accept within 10 days of offer or you lose your spot. Schools currently considering: UNC - Chapel Hill USC - Columbia, SC (current undergrad school) UGA - University of Georgia BU - Boston University Would appreciate this boards opinion on her stats and chances at the schools under consideration. Also, recommendations to any other schools. Note: funding is an issue and will likely be a factor in her decision. One more item of note... in her COMD minor, she has taken the pre-req type courses typically required prior to admission to SLP grad program.
