  1. No, inquiring at this point will not change the outcome as long as you are not harrassing them (one call is not harrassing). Personally I cant imagine you going on a trip is going to make them tell you the results sooner, unless they have a policy that says the can tell you. If you are accepted while you are abroad, you need to find a way to accept or decline so I hope you have that all sorted before you leave. Good luck!
  2. Have you checked the results page? It all depends on your program. Lots of people have heard back from those schools but obviously not for all programs. U of T's school of grad studies gives a general timeframe of mid-March to anytime after that. The way I see it, we've all been running a marathon for at least 3 months. The finishline is in the distance....just one last sprint left....hang in there!
  3. That is awful! I'm sorry, I cannot offer any concrete information, only assumptions. Perhaps they released the information too early based on some internal timeline? Are you supposed to get snail-mail confirmation of acceptance today or is it supposed to be by email?
  4. That's how I felt last week. I had this terrible sinking feeling that I couldn't shake for a few days. But since I heard nothing from my schools (still deafening silence!), I suspect it was only nerves. As Sansao said, 'good luck!' I hope we all have good news to report soon
  5. Firstly, congratulations on your acceptances. Secondly, regarding your life changes which have happened over the past 2 months--are these changes that are totally unrelated to your career or are they directly related? For instance, if you are reconsidering what you want to do with your career and spending time/$$ in the US for schooling in an area that you dont really want to pursue afterall is definitely a serious consideration. Finances are also a serious consideration. However, if these changes are related to your social life (for instance, a bad break-up, family conflict, fear of leaving your support system, etc) then I would urge you to think long and hard about turning down an offer. That is, once the crisis passes, you may strongly regret putting your future on hold for something that is no longer a factor.
  6. It can be such a difficult wait. I've actually been doing quite well with it up until a few days ago. I think it is the fact that it is finally March that pushed me from casually waiting to frantically tapping my foot with impatience But now knowing that decisions wont be mailed out until the 7th, I'm back in the 'casual' zone (thanks again for that! Really, you just saved me from gorging on another bag of doritos ) Since U of T would still need to go through a large stack of applications for the 2yr with an April deadline, I cant imagine that they are still making decisions on the 1yr. But like you said, we aren't privy to that stuff but it would be great to know.
  7. That's awesome, thanks! Does that imply that decisions have all been made and that they are just doing the paperwork??
  8. Just a question I thought I'd throw out there as I sit here through another weekend of silence. How long do you think it takes between the admissions committee making their final decisions and you actually getting word of the official result? I'll be hearing from one of my schools through snail mail and the timeline for notifications is "by mid march". They cant possibly still be meeting can they??
  9. Well aren't you the smarty pants! haha I know, I'm a total chicken. This is my second time applying and last year I did call once or twice. The person was very no-nonsense but did answer my questions without rushing me off the phone. I just dont want to call because I have in the past. I know, it makes no sense but that is just the way I feel about it. But give it another week of silence and I may just cave
  10. Congratulations!!!
  11. Has anyone had any phone communication with U of T or received any glimpses into where they are in the process? C'mon, somebody throw me a bone...anything to confirm that they (the admissions committee) haven't all gone on vacation On a more emotionally stable level, so glad that it is finally March!!
  12. fun fact: I believe that Kinder surprise Easter Eggs are illegal in the USA.
  13. Advanced standing always hears back sooner than 2yr. For U of T, you are guaranteed to hear back before March 15th. Last year they sent out decisions at the very beginning of March, the year before around 1.5 weeks in. York is ...well....unpredictable. You will hopefully find out in March sometime but I wouldn't hold my breath. Ryerson only has advanced standing so they are reviewing a much lower total of applications. In previous years they sent out decisions at the end of Feb....I suspect you will hear back from them sooner than later.
  14. That's just evil.
  15. Ginger snaps? Is it the sugar plus spice plus stress releasing crunch that does it for you? I should try that. So far I've been hitting the doritos but I think I've made the switch to chocolate now. Cadbury's is my new fav
  16. Could it be that they sent out an offer to someone else and dont want to let go of you just yet pending response from the other person? Kind of like having you on waitlist without actually telling you?
  17. Thank you so much for responding to my post. That makes good sense. Unfortunately for me based on this logic, I'm both geographically far from the school AND my name comes later in the alphabet...but if it's an acceptance, I dont mind waiting an extra day or two to find out
  18. Thanks for the update, although I am sorry to read about your rejection. Expected or not, it still sucks. Was this your top choice? All the best for your remaining applications.
  19. Hey Beth, It's great to get a good rant off of your chest, isn't it??! It sounds like you made the right choice, even if it is the more challenging one. An MSW is incredibly versatille, you cant go wrong with one. As you move along and get a better idea of where you see yourself professionally, eventually you can take courses/certificate programs etc to round out your skill set. Hang in there, you will find out soon if you are in! If the worse case scenario happens and you are denied admission, you have a year to rethink your choices but for now, you definitely made the right call. All the best for admission success!
  20. According to your signature, you are still waiting to hear back from everywhere. You haven't actually been rejected yet, have you? Although it is easy to get down (we've all been there/are there/will be there soon) remember that you still have a chance. Re: "what was I even thinking?"--well, you were thinking about furthering your education to better your career, just like everybody else. Please remember that getting rejected is NOT a reflection of you as a person. Yes, it sucks getting rejected from a school, a job interview, a significant other..etc etc. This is life. You cant and wont win them all. Your job is to find the strength and courage to try again until you find the right fit for you. All rejection does is make you work harder for what you want...
  21. That is awesome! Really, I honestly thought it would be harder than that. Perhaps some schools just have looser guidelines or that one school is in the process of sending out decisions anyways and your email was good timing?? Well, either way, I'm glad that it didn't backfire and you are getting the answers you seek Good luck with choosing from your growing pile of acceptances
  22. If you are calling to find out when you can expect a decision, there is probably no real harm in doing that. However, if you are only calling to find out whether you're admitted, ya good luck with that. It would be rare to be told your status before they have completed their process. The only time I've heard about people finding out over the phone is when decisions have already been mailed out but for whatever reason they hadn't received theirs yet. Try your best to be patient. I think we can all relate to how you may be feeling. But you dont want to risk getting on a school's radar for being impatient...seriously, dont be *that* guy!
  23. Thanks for your supportive words, I hope you're right! An A- average is awesome! Regarding work experience, I think it is often enough to demonstrate that you've worked with people in challenging situations. This could be as a camp counsellor, volunteering at a social service agency or with at risk populations, etc. In Ontario (not sure about the rest of Canada) you cannot be employed under the title 'social worker' without at least BSW. So really it would be impossible for people to have 'social work' experience when applying to any 2yr MSW program. I hope that makes sense... If you are looking for relevant jobs, you can do a search on the 'Charity Village' website. I haven't looked at it in quite a while but I recall that there were a lot of job postings for people who want to get into employed in the social services.
  24. Hi Jenste, You can quote a post by clicking the 'quote' tab on the lower right hand of the original post. The quote will appear in your message box. My plan B is to improve my gpa. I've taken a bunch of courses and now have a solid A average. I'm hoping that it will be enough to get me in the door, but you never know with this process!
  25. After getting rejected last year, I'm currently doing my plan 'B'. If this doesn't work, I'll have to go on to plan 'C' which is to go back to work full time.
