I'm in a similar position Chiqui.  My wife is on the job market for the Iowa city area and has had some positive feedback, but nothing substantial yet.  We're also cleaned out the garage of a bunch of stuff this past weekend.  Finally, we're looking to rent the house before we move. I can't wait for August!

We had a yard sale on Sunday to get some of the excess stuff under the control.  We are donating a lot of things this week and then we'll hopefully list our house. The selling of the house is what's stressing me out!
My husband had a very promising job interview today for a position in NYC, so fingers crossed!

What does your typical day look like?  How do you manage your time?  Bonus if you have a family, but not necessary.

Thanks for all the responses!  Very interesting schedules.  My goal is to keep a work schedule that resembles that of a traditional job. I want to do this for a couple of reasons, 1) I need structure or I fall off the bandwagon very quickly, and 2) since I have a husband and a kid, I NEED my evenings to be free of school work as much as possible, which means I must do everything else during the day.  My original idea was to have classes in the morning so that I could be home with the kid once school for him ends for the day but that is not going to work out.  My classes will be in the afternoon, which means we still have to have him in after school programs.  This works out in that I'll have the mornings to do reading, writing, etc.  I am also hellbent on making time for the things that make me happy and are not work, like hobbies.

I hope this isn't all a pipe dream!

    Relatively typical would be:

6am: wake up, emails, social media
    7-10am: reading (humanities student)
    10-12pm: gym
    12-1pm: lunch
    1.30-4.30pm: class
    4.30-6pm: writing/reading
    6-7pm: dinner
7-10pm: yoga, chilling out, emails, maybe a social event, but no work

My goal is to work "normal" hours, or equivalent, so that when I do have a family (starting with my hubby moving here in August) my schedule will allow for family time which aligns with his hours. I'm not someone who has a desire to work all hours of the day and night, and as you see I place a high priority on physical and mental health

That's exciting Chiqui! I can't imagine how stressful selling your home is. I'm pretty lucky to be staying with family, so all I need to do is pick up and move. Fingers crossed your husband gets the job! Keep us posted and cross your fingers that I find an apartment tomorrow, too! Even if I don't, I'm looking forward to visiting campus. I haven't had much of a chance to check it out.

I don't think it's possible for a professor to know that this year's applicant pool is the worst "ever." Maybe I'm sensitive too. I don't want to think that I was accepted because I'm a little less shitty than the rest. And that's not the impression I got from my adviser, who told me her department has gotten more applicants than ever and is slowly decreasing the cohort size.

Honestly, when I read that a bunch of tenured profs were discussing how much better applicants were before, it reminded me of the nostalgic feelings people have when discussing the 1960s radicalism or WWII. I'm not saying that some programs might not have gotten a bunch of bad apples this year, but I find that attitude suspect when I look at sources in the archive or listen to oral histories, let alone when people today harken back to the "good ol' days" when people sucked less. There is no greatest generation y'all.

I think it's an interesting question, but if I'm being perfectly honest, I don't see the point of raising it here, in a thread full of people who actually applied as part of this "weak" group of applications. Perhaps I'm being overly sensitive, but all this does is make me wonder if 1) my application was weak, and 2) if I only got into graduate schools because I happened to be a slightly less "weak" candidate and they needed people to admit.

Ended up getting a VC award at Cambridge (48 university wide scholarships, apparently out of thousands of candidates), waitlisted for funding at York (24/35 on the list, ha) and nothing whatsoever from Durham.

The most prestigious university gave me one of the rarest scholarships. The rest, nothing. Funding and grad apps are a lottery.

Older and less tech savvy? I swear that the "digital natives" only know how to use social media (exaggerating, but it boggles my mind how many 20-somethings don't really know how to use computers). Whereas those of us who are "older" remember command lines, having to program to get a computer to do anything, etc. I find those in their 40s who had Commodore 64s as their first computers are much more "tech savvy" than the 20 year old who uses social media, but can't put together a computer or program anything.

I got not one but three rejection notices from Harvard.  One on the website, one a week letter via email to check website, and then one in snail mail.  I get it, I'm rejected, no need to be obnoxious about it!

I'm visibly tattooed and it may count against me with some people. C'est la vie. Others have given advice on that front.

The advice I want to give is this: if you go for it, research your artist. Look at portfolios, choose a nice shop, get a nice tattoo. As the saying goes, "Good tattoos ain't cheap, and cheap tattoos ain't good." Don't hunt for a bargain on something you'll be keeping forever. Don't assume that because it's a simple idea any artist can do it just as well as another. Not true.
