  1. Yeah, I thought my score (790Q, 580V) was tops, looks kinda average now. The waiting for me should be over this week or next. If I don't get invited to an interview, then I'm just waiting for a rejection. Best, -the lizard
  2. Hmmm, I'll work for another year (I have job security, as long as my boss doesn't sell the business), and apply to more schools next year. So, more of the same for me, if I don't get admitted. Best, -the lizard
  3. Just something to do while I'm waiting...
  4. tell all
  5. widow maker
  6. double trouble
  7. underground railroad
  8. red rover
  9. bonus fruit (the stuff you eat in video games)
  10. book worm (according to dictionary.com, this can be spelled either as "bookworm" or "book worm")
  11. Yah, I need a W2 and a 1099 before I can do my state and federal taxes. Then once taxes are done, I can do the FAFSA. Best, -the lizard
  12. I gave all my test books away, but if I remember correctly, I found the ETS book/CDROM the most useful. The other books w/ written tests and computer tests were too easy in comparison to the real exam. Best of luck, -the lizard
  13. My last LoR writer submitted his letter two days before my application deadline. I was told the admissions committee would begin considering *completed* applications the day after the deadline. The same day my last LoR was submitted, the graduate office notified me that my application was complete, with two days to spare. I sent my Prof three reminders. I didn't overdue it, did I? I sent a reminder through embark.com in late October, early November. Then two weeks before the deadline, I emailed the Prof. Then two days before the deadline, I sent one last email, which produced the desired result. Thanks, -the lizard
  14. Thank you for all the good advice. I'm not a typical student, but I won't take the time to describe myself, except to say I'm a 42-year-old male, currently single, no dependents, and I want to stay very, very close to family in Southern California. Caltech is like pie in the sky, so I had to apply. Next year, I'll widen my search. I've visited UCLA twice, and I didn't like them. Traffic, parking, housing costs, and their computer science department has a closed-door policy (I thought I'd drop by and talk to professors, and find one or two who had similar research interests, but this is not allowed). I did my undergrad at UC Irvine, and I don't want to return. I've visited UC Riverside twice, and I love them! I was able to speak with professors (they leave their doors open while inside!), and I was invited to stay for a research seminar. Geographically, I live very close to USC, just down the 110 freeway from me (I can always buy a car!), so next year I'll have to apply there, but I don't want to live in South Central LA. Any other recommendations? Sincerely, -the lizard
  15. I had old GRE scores which were no longer reportable taken January 2006, so I had to retake the GRE, with the new scoring system. 155V (barf!), 165M, 3.5 writing I had a bad test day, my previous non-reportable scores were better: 580V, 790M, 5.0 writing. Where do I register on the barf-o-meter? -the lizard
  16. Yes, I just looked there, and discovered the following: 3 out of 39 acceptances (36 rejections). 3/39 = 1/13, or 1 acceptance per 13 applicants. About 7%. Looks like if they're interested in you, you get contacted in January or February for an interview, or multiple interviews. Acceptances seem to go out in March, with rejections going out in March and April. Thanks! -the lizard

This thread is musty, let's wake it up! Oh and Happy New Year, everyone! I applied to Caltech for Fall 2012, and I, like everyone else, is awaiting a decision. Turns out I'm a local. I live in Old Town, and work in South Pasadena. Anyone else out there?
  18. Any other locals apply to Caltech? I live in Pasadena (Old Town Pasadena), and work in South Pasadena. Just curious if any other locals applied.
  19. Hi, I applied to the graduate program in computer science at Caltech, and am checking my email too frequently. When do they normally send out notices? Or: when in the past have they sent out notices? Thanks, -the lizard
