  4. And some of us finished high school in the 90s and were on our 2nd tour of duty in the Balkans.
  5. Really interesting book. Also interesting in his use of oral sources.
  6. I would take the sure thing. Who knows what will happen next year and WUSTL is a good place.

  9. I think your big question to answer for yourself is what are your larger goals and how does what you have with stony Brook help get you there? An Ivy League phd does not guarantee you a job, nor does a SUNY degree bar you from employment. The Ivy League will of course open more doors for you, but that only mean that you get maybe some consideration that others may not. That does not mean you are guaranteed anything, it's still up to you to secure the job. The other question is, if you have a JD already, why are you even bothering with academia?

    Plan B...

It may not even be that you had something wrong. In way too many cases, factors beyond your control, like departmental politics come into play. Also, each school evaluates students differently. What to one school may be a strong writing sample may be to another school a heaping pile of steaming crap. So much of this process is so subjective. That said, it's looking like my plan b is going to be my way forward. Guess I can't really complain about a funded MBA.
  11. Speaking of the Super Bowl, Lamar Hunt, the man who came up with the name Super Bowl and former owner of the Kansas City Chiefs is the only man who's name appears on champiship trophies for two different professional sports. The Lamar Hunt Trophy goes to the winner of the AFC in the NFL and the Lamar Hunt Open Cup for soccer.
  12. No on Washington for me. Guess I'm going to business school. Oh and for those wondering, the notification was via email from the graduate school. Just a form letter.
  13. Well, good news for me today. My Plan B came through. Got accepted at the University of Utah for their MBA program.
  14. Anyone heard anything from the University of Washington yet? I think I am going to pin all my hopes on there.
  15. At least the Arse is still in the Premiership. My Hammers will be back though.
  16. I'm forever blowing bubbles.... Sorry, can't bring myself to cheer for the Arse. Forza Milan!
  17. The one bit of advice I have for actually getting your thesis done is to start writing it. I rewrote my first two chapters about 6 times before I finally got them right, but the process of actually writing helped me to gather my thoughts and think through exactly what I wanted to say.
  18. That's why it's always good to remember to address larger issues. The "so what?" questions as my advisor liked to call them. The more you relate to larger questions, the more you will appeal to a wider audience.
  19. The differences are much more stark now, after they've been separated for a few hundred years and had time to develop on their own. Even practices took time to evolve. For instance, the Czech Hussites, an early "protestant" sect, were basically Catholic and mostly upset that the the Eucharist ceased to be presented in both kinds (wine and wafer) to the masses, with only the priest partaking of the wine. After the death of Jan Hus in 1415, the church, as it was, split into factions, with some coming back into communion with Rome when they were allowed the Eucharist in both kinds, while other factions became increasingly radical and eventually sided with the followers of Martin Luther. I think by the simplest definition, a Christian is someone who believes in the divinity of Jesus Christ. You can make plenty of arguments as to who is orthodox and who is not, which creeds one needs to follow in order to be considered what particular flavor of Christian you are talking about.
  20. I'm pretty sure that the majority of my committee read the first and last chapter of my thesis. Not that I'm complaining. It is stressful, but that doesn't mean they always go through it with a fine toothed comb. That wasn't the experience of everyone in the department however, so just know your committee.
  21. not a bad idea to find out a bit about the POI and talk about their research. Professors really love to talk about their research.
