Congrats Goldie!

the effective range of the M16 rifle is 550 meters. The effective range of an excuse is 0.0 meters.

Sometimes.

And the other thing to remember, especially if you are wait listed, is that if one of the higher ranked admits decides to go somewhere else, then that opens up that funding slot for someone lower on the list, preferably someone who is actually going to go to that particular program. This happened with a friend of mine last year. His program could fund 2 incoming phd students, he was ranked #3. The other 2 accepted offers elsewhere and so that brought him up to #1, so he got a funded admit.

Modern Central and Eastern Europe. you?

Their adcom is meeting the first week or so of February and will have decisions out by the end of the month. The snow storm that closed campus for 3 days put them a bit behind.

You may want to look at Norman Naimark's book. Fires of Hatred: Ethnic Cleansing in Twentieth Century Europe. I actually do a lot with Czechoslovakia's forced expulsion of Germans after WWII. Good book to start with.

There's a Yale interview up. Anyone want to claim it?

I hope it's Hogwarts

Thankfully mine introduced me to zotero

You'd be surprised how many hot springs exist that you can dive in, all across the country. I am taking my class to one Thursday in fact. Water is about 95 degrees, which is nice this time of year, sort of like diving in the bath tub.

I tried talking about scuba diving with others who were interested, but some got offended.

Or this one

Actually, those are the ones you want because they'll generally just leave you alone.

I have kids, so therefore no life.

British schools seem to be a lot more practical about military history.

For my language, my military training was the only formal training I've received, so I had little other choice but to include it.

I think a lot of the stigma comes from the baby boomer crowd that now makes up so much of the administration of most departments. They are the Vietnam era people, most of who were smart enough to get an exemption from the draft (not that I blame them, in Vietnam, I would have done the same thing). It's sort of the same reason why there are so few military historians and so few places that even offer a military history subfield. I was at Monterey in 1999 (I'm an old dude). In my case, I don't like sharing the details of my military experience with people who haven't ever served themselves because they have little concept of anything I'm talking about. I also don't like to share what I did with a bunch of REMFs either, but if you were combat arms, you know about the pogues in the rear who kept their weapons wrapped in plastic bags in their HMMWVs so they didn't have to clean them after the FTX , and had hot chow and showers every day they were in the field.

With mine I mentioned my background a bit in my SOP. I honestly don't like talking a lot about it, for various reasons. I find many academics are skeptical of military people for starters. I also don't like to answer a lot of questions of what I did an why. As some have figured out here, I did some crazy stuff back in my time I was in and too many people have watched way too many movies. Anyway, as some of my language background came from my military experience, I included that in my application material as it was pertinent to what I would like to study. I think it's a very personal choice though and would depend on what you actually did in the military. Breaching doors and demining operations, for example, do not really relate to history, but going to DLI for language training does. If you were applying for like a military history field, then yes, for sure include it and talk about anything you did.

I feel like a total slacker. I just read Inheritance, the last of the Eragon books.

I wouldn't go ice diving without proper training and equipment. At minimum, you'd want a dry suit ($2500 for something good). That's a bit out of my budget.

What I really hate about the OWS movement is the narcissism. They do not represent the 99% of America. They are not looking out for my interests. And what really bothers me is that any time you question them, they act like you are either an idiot or committing treason just for questioning them.

Every school evaluates applicants differently. So yes, in general, History departments generally focus on the verbal score, that is not set in stone.

I subscribe to the APAB party platform. Remember, I've a veteran. The only thing a politician is good for is getting people killed and usually people who are way better than any politician.
