Anyone relocating with family for grad school?
kingspeech replied to travelnguy's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I also have two big dogs, a toddler, and a husband. He won't be coming until at least May 2014, so I'm going to need a 2-BR that allows large dogs, full-time daycare, and a babysitter. :/ -

My friend who used to work in admissions said that schools are really, really not supposed to do that...but many smaller regional schools do. -
Math Section GRE for Masters Speech Pathology
kingspeech replied to BlueEyes's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
The PR book especially helped me with strategies on the writing section. I pulled my writing up from a 2.5 (took it straight out of college, didn't think I had to study) to a 5. Looking through the results postings, I think schools in this field may weigh the writing more heavily than people think. -

Exact same story here. I'm trying to decline it and open it up for someone else, if their website would let me! -

kcald, did Western Carolina let you enter your decision? If so, what browser did you use? -
How do you go about putting a name other than your legal one on your diploma, and publishing under it?

Staying Put or Trying Something New?
kingspeech replied to SLPzs91's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I'd go to the new place. In addition to the new connections and ideas you'd gain, your resume will reflect that you've earned degrees from multiple well-regarded schools and departments. Also, you say that the programs are equally good, but I'd see whether one had a special focus on a disorder or population that I was interested in. -

I think that the Western Carolina supplemental app was to weed people out...like if you applied to 20 schools and got an acceptance already, applied to WCU as a backup, and were going to decline anyway. They probably just dropped people who didn't take the time to return the form. Or at least that's what I would do. -
Does anyone know how to make a poster?
kingspeech replied to aGiRlCalLeDApPlE's topic in Writing, Presenting and Publishing
Seconding that design is paramount. In my field, posters are a great place to network with more seasoned academics, away from the crush of the invited talks. -
Choosing an area of Focus
kingspeech replied to queenleblanc's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Voice! I find the anatomy and physiology of the larynx so fascinating, and all of the voice SLPs I've heard speak or teach are so secure in their knowledge and downright bossy when it comes to muscle tension dysphonia. I'm also interested in exploring research and eventually the PhD route, and most prof openings posted in the ASHA leader seem to have voice listed as a preferred area of expertise. -
If it were me, I would make my husband care for her, because it would drive me crazy to have sole responsibility for our child's feeding (and sleeping!) beyond the newborn stage. You say that he can't afford to miss work, but you also say that you can't afford to bring her, so both options will cost money, but bringing her would be more stressful to me than having my husband be the primary parent for a bit. However, in light of the fact that right now, you are the primary parent, you can consider your schools' attitudes for this visit a litmus test for how they'll treat you while you spend several years of your life with them. Also, take heart; babies' feeding patterns change quickly, and it sounds like she's at the age for solids, so stuff will be changing.

SLP/Communication Disorders Masters Applicants
kingspeech replied to SJS's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Yes, it was. The form is so that they can scan a barcode that will ensure your ID # gets linked to the correct transcripts. Just make sure you enter it correctly in the mailing address. I know of a few other people who ordered transcripts this way. -
SLP/Communication Disorders Masters Applicants
kingspeech replied to SJS's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I attended three schools in three different states, so what I did was request transcripts be mailed to CSDCAS directly, with "CSDCAS ID: [my ID#]" as the second line of the address. They received them all. I don't know if it's too late to request transcripts be shipped overnight from your schools. This is from the CSDCAS FAQ: -
I would develop expertise in a particular region of the world/foreign language, or in an area of computer science. Go to http://www.intelligence.gov/ and review the job descriptions at the various agencies.
