  1. That is great news genesisy. Good luck with the interview!
  2. smh.....This is just my opinion, of course, but some of us should really work on being more considerate and humble. Good luck to everybody!!
  3. BreathingSister, They will most likely leave a message if you don't answer, and from my experience, so far, the numbers won't be blocked.
  4. @Fanon_Fanatic, thanks, and congrats to you on your acceptances! Yes it feels great to get that first acceptance out of the way. I was chomping at the bits all week, losing sleep and everything. Now I can sit back and enjoy the ride without stressing so much. Hey I noticed that we applied to several of the same programs. Just in case I missed this info in another post, what are your research interests? @Bespeckled, thanks for the congrats also. I have to agree with Fanon_Fanatic that it is still early in the game. When I applied in '09' for masters and PhD programs, I didn't hear anything good until the second week of February, so sit tight and think positive. @alh, I work on black masculinity, gender and sexuality, queer Studies, hip-hop and popular culture, and African American Literature. Because of various factors that attracted me to each program, it's hard to say which one is my top choice. But I can say that the frequent sunny weather in Southern California definitely sweetens USC's pot.
  5. Papillon, I also have an interview with a program. I actually received a phone call from the DGS and I asked him about the interview process. He assured me that I should focus most on enjoying the experience and to think of it more as an opportunity for (1) the department to "recruit" me, and (2) for me to network with the faculty and students, and (3) to meet my potential cohort. He did say that there will be eight other potential students attending. The first night there will be a "meet and greet" dinner with faculty and current graduate students followed the next day by one-on-one interviews with potential advisors, and a group interview. Finally, the weekend will close with a university-wide graduate symposium, giving us the opportunity to see the type of research that the graduate students are working on. Of course I'm sure that each program will have different formats. I also asked him what type of questions I can expect. He said that they are (1) interested in discussing my work and research interests, (2) why I chose the particular field and program, and (3) that they want to give us the opportunity to ask them questions as well. All in all, it seems like a little fun mixed with a few nervous moments, but you should feel good about it. After all, you have been selected for an interview because they see potential in you and your work. I am going to be myself and stay true to what I expressed in my personal statement. However, I do plan to brush up on my reading, particularly articles written by my potential advisors. Just make sure that you show them the best "you" the entire time (first impressions are lasting impressions). Good luck!!
  6. If anyone is interested, University of Maryland (College Park) is contacting people. I received a phone call yesterday evening from the DGS congratulating me on my acceptance into their PhD program. Coincidentally, I also received a phone call from the DGS at Northwestern's Performance Studies program inviting me to the campus on March 1 for an interview. I'm excited!! Now I can take a sigh of relief and wait for the results to come in from my other 6 schools. Good luck to everyone!!
