No, if anything the Austria ETA will help you get it. They look for people with experience, who can show that they will be able to handle the situations you are placed in. That is why they usually pick people who have done with prior study abroad. As far as the official policy is, there is no prejudice in applications. So a person can apply freely.

I sent an email and got no response, which makes me think that Hoermann is unwilling to speak about these things. Molly has been more open in discussions in the past, but I am sort of unwilling to continue sending emails out, I feel like I have sent too many. I imagine they select alternates based on past experiences of people dropping out (so perhaps just a few above the number they expect to open).

Hormann didn't respond yet to an email I sent him late last week (Friday), so I assume he was not in his office today. It's just him doing all of this.

Keep in mind, you may be overstating the "quantifiable logic" behind their decision; you may not necessarily get the same people viewing it. Meaning that there is a high amount of irrationality behind almost any decision, especially when candidates have such close competitive levels. The biggest issue, I think, is the amount of teaching experience as well as German skills. These are the two big ones. You and I may have failed to properly prove to them that our German can be trusted.

Okay, I thought it was 1050 and then health care and taxes... I find it strange that a program that is smaller and less funded pays more, but from what I know Austria is expensive (more so than Germany) so it makes sense.

That very well might be the case, I just thought alternates go out first since that was the case with the Germany Fulbright.

Yea, but part of that money goes to health care, so it evens out; and the Austria program doesn't pay back your flight ticket.

I imagine this must happen to a lot of people who are accepted by Germany ETA and have applied for the USTA. The Fulbright Germany program gets a lot more applicants and is more competitive, so if you were picked by it it would not be hard to see the Austria program wanting you as well. As for your position, I doubt they have even placed you yet. Congrats though, it was my dream to be accepted to both.

I honestly can't say I even have a clue with them. Because they are assigining schools as we speak, emails might be more difficult to draft out and I know their crew is pretty small (I think only one American). Who knows, best to wait and hope for the best.

Yea, I felt that way also and much like you I kind of stopped mid-track so that I would not get my hopes up. Well, it now seems two posters have mentioned someone not getting it... The waiting continues.

Waiting on USTA as well, not very hopeful though, but we are supposed to be hearing by the 15th the latest. As of now, we know that at least one person has received a rejection via email.

here is an email i received about a week ago for a question I asked: "The AAEC is currently in the process of placing the teaching assistants for the 2012-13 school year together with the Austrian Ministry of Education the Arts and Culture. Placement is contingent on various factors, including but not limited to, availability of schools, quality of the application and number of new applicants as well as extending teaching assistants. Applicants will be informed about their placement by mid-April at the latest." Remember, the likelihood is that the earlier you hear, the more likely the chance that you go rejected. I do not think that the USTA program is as organized as Fulbright, but they probably do have a system. The longer you do not hear, the better. Most likely.

If I don't get the USTA application, I might apply again for Poland. I'm thinking that maybe the language issue (that you don't need it) and that you work in a Uni might make it easier to deal with for me.

I just had an email conversation which was pretty political and straight forward basically saying that it is a difficult decision and many things have to be taken into account including space, number of applicants and funding in question so... the paragraph could be summed up to one part: Mid-April at the latest.That your friend got the rejection means that they are perhaps going through the disqualifications now, which means you should be happy that your haven't heard yet. Remember how we were the first to hear about our Fulbright Status for Germany?

Im going to consider reapplying. For those who got accepted, would you guys mind opening up your personal and grant purpose statement? That way some of us looking to re-apply could fiddle through them and perhaps check for patterns that might indicate what they like. Especially for me the Germany folks.

They might still be debating between candidates as they trim down the list.

I say we reject Fulbright and form our own scholarship, only for the rejected. We'll call it "Rejectbright". It will be open only to those who have received a no in their lives. Btw, lKjl, you might be in luck if people have made dual applications for Austria and Fulbright... its rare that there is a double scholarship like that. I'm waiting on Austria, but I'm not very hopeful. It was not a top quality application but I am hoping that perhaps Fulbright will siphon off some and allow some space for the Fulbright rejected.

Very likely, if you didn't get a rejection now it probably means you got it.
