RortyRorty: Lol, c'mon...Van Gogh was never accepted

All of this acceptance/not-acceptance stuff is a crap shoot (like sending stuff out to a juried show)...so, I say KEEP AT IT!

You *%&^ing rule and you know it, so keep hammering away. Everyone wants to see you back at it next year!

Plus, if you don't, I'm going to hunt you down and kick your butt

This does not sound like a good idea. Please don't take this the wrong way, I don't mean to crush any dreams or hopes for living in a peaceful and beautiful local but I don't think there would be any galleries/exposure on the top of the Rockies or in any forest. If you want to have a career as an artist, you need to place yourself in the heart of the beast. NY, L.A., Chicago, Texas, Boston, Florida, Washington DC, SF.. these are all hot spots. If you really want to give yourself an advantage, go to places like London, China, Brazil, France, Germany (I know some of you are going to respond with things like, "it's not just about selling," or "not every amazing artist lived in any of these places." All true, but, if you think about the competition for the field we have chosen (which continues to steadily rise year after year) it would be smart to take up more of a business stance to all of this.

Unless you are quilting, making watercolors of deer for a state fair or designing signs for local lawn mowing businesses, you need to be in a place where there's an art hub and community.

Rejected by NYU Steinhardt. I would prefer just "REJECTED" over the bs. I dont need some fake apologetic rationalized response to make it all seem ok. A rejection is a rejection, thats it. If anything, tell me exactly why I got rejected.

So... I was accepted to #4 ranked Cranbrook and rejected from #106 ranked Tulane which makes me laugh. This process is pretty subjective. This result also tells me that there is really no such thing as a "safety school." Safety is in number of applications to a variety of schools.

If you didn't get in this year, the lesson learned is - apply to top, middel, and bottom ranked schools - and as many as you can afford because there is no rhyme or reason to this process.

Someone else said to me, "There is no money in education." Duh! I have spent 13 years in education, I think my bank account and I know that quite well.

Another goodie, "Are you sure you did everything you could on your apps?" I actually considered adding glitter in my FedEx envelope for my transcripts, but hopefully spending almost 6 months preparing for the GRE, 3 months on the statement and obsessing over my apps even AFTER I submitted should be enough. Well, I guess I could have sent a musical card too.

You know what is interesting about the whole "ranking" thing? There are more than a few fantastic artists to come out of "nowhere" schools. Take Cindy Sherman for instance. She went to Univ of Buffalo-SUNY, which, due to it's low ranking (somewhere around #76 in the (in)famous US News rankings) puts it in the "nowhere" category. And, well, she's done pretty well for herself. Likewise, many mediocre artists (or ones not able to continually make art due to any number of reasons) have graduated from the likes of Yale, Copper Union, RISD, etc...just look at the statistics/ratio of grads vs teachers.

Point being, there have been amazing artists that have gone on to do great, genre bursting work and it didn't matter if they went to Boonies U. or Yale, they "made it" regardless. It's the commitment one has towards one work (and the ensuing success) that matters, and that is what is more likely going to get you a teaching position, not simply where you went.

    A linguistics joke!:

A panda walks into a bar. He takes a seat by the bartender and orders a burger and a beer. He receives his food & drink and makes quick work of them. Once he's done, he gets up, pulls out an uzi and kills everyone in the establishment except the bartender who manages to duck behind the bar. Eventually the Panda stops and starts heading for the exit. Before he makes it to the door, the bartender jumps out and shouts, "Why did you do that?!" The Panda sheepishly turns around and walks back to the bartender. He takes out a dictionary, flips to the P-section, and shows the bartender the page. It reads:

    pan-da.
    n. a mammal native to Asia; eats shoots and leaves

    I got this!

"We are delighted that you applied to the Department of xxx at the University of yyy and we are considering you for what is called a Multi-Year fellowship. However, at present, we only have two letters in your file, one from Professor zzz and the other from Professor qqq. Could you please instruct your third referee to send us their letter of recommendation as soon as possible!"

I think when they ask for your stuff, that means they DON'T want to throw out your application. I am feeling positive right now...
