  1. Does anyone know what the process is for being approved for a Grad PLUS loan? Here is my situation: I'm taking summer courses. My total summer tuition cost is $8,750. I've been approved for a Federal Direct unsubsidized loan in the amount of $10,250. This obviously covers the tuition cost and gives me $1,500 extra for living/book expenses...which will not be enough to live off and pay my bills. So...I will be applying for a PLUS loan. From what I understand PLUS loans have no limit and can be used to cover the total cost of attendance not covered by direct fed loans. But in my case this summer, direct fed loans DO cover the tuition cost. So...I'm wondering: 1) Would I be approved for a PLUS loan even though direct fed loans already cover the cost of tuition? 2) Is there more leniency regarding the credit history check when approving PLUS loans than the process used by normal private lenders? (I have two credit cards, both in good standing but both with high balances relative to credit amount allowed) 3) Would there be a cap on my PLUS loan if I was approved? (If no cap, I would actually like to use PLUS money to pay off credit card debt)
  2. Please decline it asap before they send out the rest of the financial decisions! What did your email look like? Did it seem like a mass email or was it personalized?
  3. Does anyone know of any MPA/MPP or public service-specific grants out there still accepting applications?
  4. Well for me it really came down to personal reasons. While GW obviously has the alumni advantage over Maxwell in DC, I'm not necessarily sure that I want to end up in DC. The prestige and history of the Maxwell program really attracted me to it, along with the flexibility to be able to use the degree locally, regionally, or nationally (I'm from Western NY).
  5. I was accepted to Maxwell MPA and will be attending there in the summer. Also accepted to GW Trach, and American SPA, (waiting on one other, Penn Fels), but I will be attending Maxwell. Can't wait!
  6. I've been accepted to GW Tracht (MPA), Maxwell (MPA), and American SPA (MPA). Partial to Maxwell (as everyone in this thread already knows) but wondering whether or not I'm making poor decision in sticking with it over Tracht at this point.
  7. You're referring to Maxwell IR grads, no? I'm talking specifically about Maxwell MPA grads. I guess the bigger question is: Is the distinction even important between IR and MPA when looking for employment?
  8. I guess I just don't understand how a program like GW Tracht, a tiny cohort in the arts and sciences school at GW is more presitigous than a program like Maxwell. By lumping in ESIA, you seem to be saying that its about the overall school brand recognition, not the actual program itself.
  9. I'm not arguing that Syracuse is better than WWS and HKS. But "nowhere near the top of the list"?
  10. Would you put GW Tracht ahead of Syracuse as well?
  11. Myrnist, I take your point and I appreciate the detailed response. As you note, quantifying the impact of alumni in the field is difficult to do. This is the one area, in my understanding, that Maxwell has an advantage. Being the oldest MPA program in the country, Syracuse has made a unique imprint on the field that I believe has to be taken under consideration. With my limited knowledge about the program, it seems that this is the main factor behind its subjective, outdated #1 ranking. Although the program may not produce heads of state and top ranking officials, its alumni network is deeply rooted and has expansive reach within the field. At least that is my understanding. Also, if the program is not "elite", why does the school have a relationship with schools such as WWS, SAIS, and GPPI? I know that the admissions chair travels regularly with colleagues from these schools, and SAIS does offer that dual degree with Maxwell, not a more "elite" MPA program in your estimation.
  12. Is that just your opinion or is it rooted in fact
  13. Maxwell seems to get a bad rap on this forum...not sure why
