  1. Just got the official offer from SFU today! ...I think I will decline because I really like UBC..... I only have until April 18th to decide
  2. When I meant work experiences, I meant anything outside of school! Not just paid but also volunteering, research, extra-curriculars!
  3. Work experience is extremely important. I would find a job related to public health this summer while you're studying for the GREs. I'm Canadian and I've been accepted to some school so far. I don't have a good GPA but I have many related experience in public health. I am sure US is similar. Even if the work is not paid, if it has something to do with PH, it's a bonus. Try volunteering at an NGO. Find internship. Join a public health research lab. Speak to your health professors. Start a school club or join a school club related to raising awareness for PH related cause. Good luck!!!
  4. Thank you Ginnie! I'm leaning more towards UBC right now because they do seem to have more affiliations with women's health research... but still deciding!
  5. hey mph0000 <-- UofA told me that i'll hear back end of April ish....
  6. Hey I haven't received the official acceptance letter yet. So I don't know. This is what they emailed me: "We are pleased to inform you that we are recommending to the Dean of Graduate Studies that you be admitted to the MPH - Global Health in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University. You can expect to receive a formal offer of admission by email in the next few weeks." I received this email on March 13.
  7. SFU - Accreditation.. how important is this realistically? If I have UBC MPH, is it really impossible to work in the States?
  8. I am having a lot of trouble deciding. I thought this might be a concern for some of you as well. Let's post advantages/disadvantages!
  9. I just had a 10min telephone interview with Alberta today! Pretty basic and simple! If you're preparing for it, make sure you know what the program you're going into is about and what you can bring to the program! typical interview questions.. I was asked 4/5 questions
  10. Hi Lilac, I received my official acceptance email and mail. I was accepted on March 1st. I also want to share that I was invited yesterday to do a 10min telephone interview with the Uni of Alberta MPH-Global Health focus. Is anyone else doing this? I am just wondering how it's going to be like... I don't know what you can say in 10min...
  11. Just got accepted - SFU - Global Health Concentration! Which school do you guys think is better in terms of the curriculum and research? UBC/SFU? I am really interested in maternal health.
  12. My GPA was not good... I had decent cGPA.. but my 300/400 level gpa was pretty low. I think I had just the cut off - 75% average... So actually I was quite surprised.. but I know I had really strong references, research, and extra-curriculars.
  13. Hi everyone. Do you know any forums/facebook groups/etc. where we can actually talk to current or past graduates of UBC MPH? I'd really like to talk to someone and ask tons of questions about the program... research... extra-curriculars... practicum... etc.. I am not from BC and my UBC friends don't seem to know much about it either. thanks.
  14. Hi, I got a "recommended for admission" on march 1st, and just today I got an official admissions email.
  15. I got accepted at UBC as well Yesterday I am also unsure whether I should accept or not..... since I am still waiting from UofT, SFU, McMaster, and UofA
  16. It depends. Usually btw March-April. Sometimes May. Don't wait! Just forget about it.
  17. Oh wow - the admissions systems at the universities are sometimes really frustrating! But I think the schools know that - they seem to be apologizing every time I send them an email about the status I hope you get into your choices! Good luck!! We'll have to wait months now!
  18. I really want to do public health, but I know that it's difficult to get into.. so I thought maybe I need a back-up plan. I also like psychology research I chose UA, SFU, UT, and Mac bc they have good global health programs - I am interested in working for the minority population as well as the international population. I also chose UBC because I like Vancouver!
  19. Hi I applied to this program and realized 90% of all my friends who've applied to Med schools applied as well. Msc GH at MAC is one of the backup plans for many of the med school applicants bc it's a one year program that offers really great international experiences that will help people boost of their CVs. ..so basically we are competing against ppl with 4.0 GPAs?? .. But I know I have a couple of friends who were in the program last year, and they told me that although it's super competitive, they really look for global experiences, such as working in the North in Canada, or abroad somewhere to volunteer or research. they also like to see students who are super well-rounded bc they want to select students who would be able to adapt quickly during the international research practicum. My friend who just graduated said that the program was not very organized... and she felt that she didn't necessarily "learn" about what she's going to do in the future... like just another BSc kind of feeling. But she said it gets her tons of jobs. I applied because I really want to work in the global workforce in the future doing clinical stuff and research as well... I am hoping they'll be more organized this year (if I get accepted)!
  20. What do you think my chances are? I am so anxious... and I am so clueless at the moment: I applied to: a) MPH UofT Health Promotion MPH UBC c) MPH Alberta (global health) d) MPH SFU (global health) e) MSc Global Health at McMaster My cGPA is 3.65 I have great references 4 research experiences (currently 2 - one in global health) 2 local volunteering 1 international volunteering exec for 2 clubs Intern at MSF Toronto Piano Teacher and lots of other random stuff like I have a snowboard instructor's license and I have ARCT Piano performance at RCM. I feel I have strong ECs.. but my GPA is not amazing..... Should I apply to other Master programs not in public health, but in psychology or life sciences as my back up? Or do you think I might have a chance? help
