  1. If you're buying books online, I'd suggest using BookFinder to do cross-site price comparison.
  2. Also, for those of you in Humanities/Social Science: see if the journal publishes a list of books it wants reviewed but can't find a reviewer for. I know of a couple journals that do this, and you'll get a free book (and review) out of the process. However, one of those journals also won't take on any reviewers who don't have their Ph.D. in hand already, so check on that as well.
  3. With cats, it all seems to depend on the temperament. I moved with the mostly-mellow Cat (yes, I have a cat named Cat) around 700 miles for my M.A., and will be doing around twice that for my Ph.D. For both moves, I'll be stopping the first night at my parent's house, so I never had to put her in a hotel. For the first move, I put her in her chest harness and tied the leash to the passenger seat headrest. Then I gave her time to get used to the inside of the car (and to make sure she couldn't manage to hurt herself). She hates moving anywhere not under her own power (including being picked up), so I knew she'd hate the move no matter what. I also kept a freshly washed, clean litter box within reach, in case she wanted somewhere "safe" to crawl into. She wasn't thrilled for the first hour or so, but after I'd been on the road for awhile she settled down and slept most of the way next to me. I did have her carrier and some treats on hand as well just in case, but I never needed them.
  4. I lived in Alabama and did my undergrad at UA, Tuscaloosa. I've since moved away, but I have lots of friends who are still in the area. I'd second recommendations about South Side. My best friend grew up there and still speaks well of it, even though she's now at Mizzou. Be aware, through, that Birmingham has declared bankruptcy and is currently undergoing restructuring. So city facilities are critically understaffed and people are waiting in all-day lines just to get the basics handled.
  5. Dammit, UCSC, I have a thesis draft to write. This waiting is not helping me focus on my literature review! [/tinyfistshaking]
  6. Anyone want to claim the new NYU MCC posting? I'm mostly just curious about how many applied, and if they implied there was an official/unofficial waitlist.
  7. Thanks, it does! I guess I might as well just e-mail them, then; I'd rather go on my first visit knowing if I'm in or out instead of waiting on pins and needles.
  8. UCSC's web system said March, so I'm giving them until the second week before I e-mail to get a solid date.
  9. @AlexGuermantes, are you the UMinn Comms posting on the results survey that's by post or by e-mail? I'm likely going to e-mail them anyway in a few days, since I've pretty much heard from all the schools I expected to get into by now, but I'm wondering if I should just wait on the post.
  10. From what I understand through a prof who did their PhD there back in the day, UCSC's been trying to phase HistCon out for awhile now, so funding is tight. Thus, I wouldn't be surprised if the admin higher-ups have put the pressure on them to also shrink the grad student pool down.
  11. Regarding results: I'm not the one who posted, but I got an acceptance from Maryland with funding. They didn't talk about the numbers of that, though. It appears they're having a small visiting class (3 people in all). Regarding background: I applied with an M.A. (defending in April); BA/MA are both interdisciplinary humanities from large state R1s.
