  1. Congrats and how did you find out? Website or email?
  2. I see a The Ohio State University acceptance on the results page. Come out, come out, wherever you are?
  3. A bit of a random topic during this hectic application cycle but is it normal for doctoral students in history to take undergraduate foreign language classes? Also, do doctoral students normally pay for these language courses or do graduate fellowships normally cover the costs?
  4. Well this is embarrassing, I didn't click "Graduate Application" at the bottom. I kept clicking "Review Account" as I thought that was the only option. Why would they put that at the very bottom? Thank you so much for helping!
  5. Hello historians, I am having a bit of trouble but how have you added another school's applications onto the collegeNET other than the original school for which you created the account (hopefully this isn't too confusing). Many PhD programs (Ohio State, Michigan, Brown) use this site and I am frustrated as I cannot figure out how to start another application other than the original one. I keep going through each school's graduate admissions website but there is no button to start an application for that specific school. All it says is "Review Activity" and takes me to my original Brown application without the option of adding another application. Thanks for your help
  6. Here's my 2 cents: -Don't get a PhD from a European school & expect to teach in the states (except for Oxbridge). -Don't get a PhD in any "Studies" area. Go for either history or anthro. Interdisciplinary PhDs struggle on the already depressing job market -Not sure if U of M's anthro/history PhD program has ample funding. I remember looking at the dept.'s website a couple of months ago and it appeared that there was no standard 4-5 year guaranteed funding package. -Don't pick "Safety" schools. In order to make it in this terrible job market, you need a PhD from at least a top 20 program in medieval history. -You need to be prepared to take a year off if you don't get in. You appear as if you're "rushing" to get to grad school. If you want to get a PhD & remain sane, patience and diligence is the key. Go teach English abroad in that year off! Do a non-academic job that you enjoy! Go backpacking in Europe! Do something out of the box and non-academic!
  7. Random question but I posted this in the History forum page as well, Anyone know of an intensive summer language program focusing on Korean? I would like to go into Korean history & need to get going on language preparation quite soon. Thanks all
  8. I actually applied to CLS and didn't get in. UChicago does have a Korean language study option but it is quite expensive and offers zero financial aid. Michigan and UCLA has summer language study in only Chinese & Japanese. I have considered travelling to South Korea for the summer but once again...very expensive.
  9. I'll be applying to PhD programs in modern Korean history next fall but I've been browsing the history forums here for quite awhile. I finally bit the bullet and made an account. Random question and sorry to sidetrack everyone from their grad admissions process (wish you all the best of luck!) I want to do intensive language study this upcoming summer. I have no formal background in Korean language (taking a beginner Chinese class currently). How did you guys go about studying your respective field's required languages and does anyone know of an intensive language study program that offers Korean (Chinese & Japanese dominates summer programs such as Middlebury)? Also any Koreanists out there in forumland?
