  1. Really wishing programs would send out notices in large batches instead of people hearing from somebody who happens to email them. And stop torturing us with delayed rejections. False hope is just mean.

  2. Everybody is so busy talking about TT positions, and making good points, that they're forgetting something rather important. There are, in fact, jobs for classical archaeologists beyond the standard TT of academia. People get into museum work, academic publishing, and other related things. And you don't have to be in academia proper to keep working on digs and such. It all depends on what your goal is for that PhD. Now, in fairness, for some of this, you can probably top out with a master's degree, but that's something that you can figure out along the way. Just something to keep in mind.
  3. Well, that was MY plan, but I guess I can share it. It would probably work with a fair number of majors, now that you mention it.
  4. My plan B is to teach high school Latin and try again next year. But since this is my first go at PhD land (currently finishing an MA), that'd be 2 rounds of apps. Which would be expensive, espeically as I'd be dealing with student loan payments. But honestly, I think a second round would be the limit. At 35, I really don't have the time to keep pouring into this. *sigh*
  5. I'd wondered about that when it was announced. One of the reasons I decided to take it earlier than I was originally planning. Things always go a bit squishy when they make changes like that.
  6. Just remember, you only need one. And it looks like you have at least that. Options would be better, and you do have more waiting, but you're not out of the game yet.
  7. I hope you're right! You'd think that if the deadlines are clustered (mostly) within a week of eachother, results would be too. But it's been a week and a half since my first response and nothing since. Which blows. I'm surprised we haven't heard anything about the Joukowsky institute yet. From the looks of last year's results, we should have heard something by now.
  8. I'm 35, in my last year of an MA, waiting on PhD results. I'm lucky since my boyfriend is job flexible. But I'm hoping that I'm not the oldest person in whatever program I end up in. Not that I don't like my younger fellow students, but some of them are just so ... young. Especially the undergrads, obviously. Still, no kids to worry about, no home to sell, just 2 kitties and some furniture to drag out of CA with me. Could be worse. Assuming I get in anywhere. *sigh* Waiting is hell.
  9. While I haven't had a phone interview with grad programs, my advice would be to stick with honesty. If they ask you something you're not prepared for, I'd suggest going for a simple "Hmm. (brief pause) Well, I hadn't thought about it, but my first thought is ..." and go from there. Thoughtful is probably better than polished on something like that. But that's my impression, so definitely come up with your own game plan. But I think if you have a plan for dealing with unexpected questions, that should speak well of your maturity, flexibility, and confidence. Good luck!
  10. Waiting for news. Feeling antsy and a little crazy. This process kind of sucks.

  11. Basically everywhere. I also applied to Brown's Joukowsky Institute, UT Austin, Florida State, Johns Hopkins' interdepartmental Classical Art and Archaeology program, and Boston U's Archaeology program. I'm applying from an MA program, so hopefully that helps. We'll see though.
  12. It's hard to feel confident after staring at my lone rejection for the last week. Of course, it doesn't help that I'm having to deal with Greek this semester when I wasn't planning to. The downside of a small program.Latin poetry is cool. I've enjoyed the classes involving the major poets, although Statius bored me terribly.Tomorrow would be nice, definitely!
  13. Roman archaeology. You'd think being TA for an intro Latin sequence would help, but nothing yet. You?
  14. I haven't heard anything except for Cornell. The waiting is terrible. *sigh* Here's hoping lots of decisions get sent out tomorrow?
  15. It's been a while, but from what I recall of Davis, you pretty much have to go to SF or Sac to go to a bar. Granted, I didn't exactly get out much, and I'm not much of a drinker anyway, but Davis? Not really a happening place, so to speak. Half the time, we'd go to sac to see a movie that wasn't playing at the smallish movie theater. So ... *shrug* ... keep in mind that SF is about 1 - 1/2 hours from Davis, and Sac is probably 3/4 - 1 hour. Depending on traffic, obviously. So it's not exactly a hardship to head out of town to get your party on.Unless you like to party more than me. Which, actually, wouldn't be hard, but I think you get the idea. ;)But like I said I've never been to Davis. This would apply to most smallish cities, college towns maybe being the exception. (edited so my reply isn't thrown in with the quoted text. my bad.)
  16. If my experience is any indication, the expectations and responsibilities for the TA depend as much on the professor of the class as the school/department. Now, I'm TAing an introductory sequence Latin class, not sciences, so your millage may vary. But, I teach class twice a week, the professor teaches the other three. Last semester I took attendance, gave & graded quizzes, handed back materials, and held office hours. This semester I take attendance (sort of), give no quizzes, grade nothing, and hold office hours. It's more about the structure of the class under the different professors, but still. *shrug*
