For the schools that have notified you (acceptance or waitlist), just tell them you're declining as you've accepted somewhere else. They'll just strike you from their list altogether. If there are any other schools that you haven't heard from at all, it shouldn't be a big deal to withdraw your application. Just thank them for considering you but tell them you've accepted another offer. On the other hand, you can always wait to hear from them so you don't feel like you wasted your application money.

http://www.happyschoolsblog.com/revised-new-gre-score-conversion-chart/ This should help. I scored ~320 on the new GRE and I'm told it converts to a bit under ~1400.

Any current or recent Memphis grad students around to give an update of what living there is like/costs?
-
They're likely not going to rescind an offer if you fail a chemistry course, esp. as a math major, but you do need to show a final transcript. Why would you even want to put yourself in the position of having to explain "I just didn't feel like it"?

Add me to the list of 2 acceptances without formal/on-campus interviews. I did, however, meet almost all of my POIs and have informal interviews with them during a national conference in January.

Especially all of the people that use their real names - first and last - as their usernames

Accepted to Auburn and quite possibly my leading candidate at this point. Can anyone give any updates?
-
Look at it this way - Better to spend a few hundred now and potentially find out you HATE the school/town/dept/advisor than spend several THOUSAND and waste a few YEARS to move there and leave...

Direct quote from the NSFGRFP website: Do people even read these things anymore???

Just look. Waiting isn't going to change the decision at all, it's already been made.

Not true, as I understand it. They fund the researcher, not the research, as they're fond of saying. The requirement for accepting the fellowship is that you be enrolled in A grad school that fall. Another thing to consider: If you do get the fellowship and you're dead set on the initial school, call them up as soon as you find out and say "Hey, I just found out I received the NSF GRF. Would your department be willing to reconsider my application?" In many cases (and I'm not saying this is proper, as the NSF explicitly states they're trying to avoid this), the GRF turns in to your Willy Wonka Golden Ticket and you'll have an admissions letter in your inbox within the week. A girl from my UG got outright rejected at her first choice school, got the NSF and contacted admissions, and was enrolled that fall. Final thing to consider, regarding that last point: Do you really want to go to a school that didn't want you in the first place?

I do it too... but mine's even worse. I have my spam filter turned off and I still check sometimes

On the contrary, it sounds like the professor knows EXACTLY how to write a letter, and that the OP is a strong student in technical matters but lacks maturity. But yes, OP, it will be of benefit to ask if the letter they write will be a strong one. If they say yes and still write something like this, then that's a bit petty. All of my letters are strong letters, but I don't have letters from everyone I asked. One supervisor, whom I knew I had a somewhat rocky relationship with, agreed to write me a "letter" when I asked for a "strong letter." I politely declined, and everyone benefitted; I didn't end up with a crappy letter, and he didn't end up having to lie on my letter or sabotage my application.

You got much more productive replies. One has ignored me so far, another forwarded my email to someone more appropriate, and one told me to start considering those other offers because they'd already had their interview day and I wasn't invited. Oh wait....
-
You all have much more self control than I do. I finally heard from schools on Friday and promptly turned around and emailed all my other schools saying I had offers and why the heck hadn't I heard anything when their due dates were earlier than schools that had answers!
-
I've got a job kayaking around saltmarshes working on birds for US Fish and Wildlife. A little nervous about the dates - unless I get into the school that's on quarters, I'll have a week or two at most to drive home from the job (14hrs), pack, and move to the grad school (anywhere from 8-32 hrs away)! But it's a nice diversion - no pressure data collection, fun stuff that I mostly know how to do but will keep my skill set fresh for my own research.

Exciting interview for Plan B job, then...
guttata replied to tetrandra's topic in Decisions, Decisions
Neither is in the bag. You're not committed. Go at the job like you've been rejected from grad school. Talk to the grad school and don't mention the job, see what they're offering. If you get offered the job later, you have a decision to make and you're free to turn down either. I don't know why people are so worried about "hurting feelings." Everyone knows you can only take one position, thats why waitlists exist. No one is going to be hurt/hold a grudge if you turn down their offer -
Don't worry too much about this. Every school handles things extremely differently, and decisions can take longer depending on where you stand in their application pool. I was accepted today to 3 schools (which was nuts) that had deadlines of Feb 1, but I have yet to hear anything at all from the schools that had deadlines of Dec 15, 31, and Jan 10. The Dec 15 school actually just had their admissions meeting yesterday!

I'll believe it when I see it. Just saying

Post the Application Status That's Ruining Your Life
guttata replied to Benjamin Lucas Easterwood's topic in Waiting it Out
Now, that list of admit reasons include Reasons 1, 1a, 2, 3, 3a, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8a, and 8b. And then Deny Reasons 1-13. Each with a little No current status. Please check back later. Argh. -
Somewhere else on the boards it was mentioned they use FedEx. Can't find it right now...

The department has accepted you, but you have not been officially accepted by the graduate school yet. The department wants you, you're basically in. I've never seen a graduate school turn down a candidate that a department has recommended. As long as you've met the minimum requirements for admission to the school, go ahead and start getting your hopes up.

I wouldn't worry. This isn't specific and when I tried it it seemed to be almost 100% undergraduate admissions results for every school. Pretty worthless, IMO.
