With this info in hand, I lean toward punked. The eligibility essay is requested at the submission deadline, not months later, and it seems to be out of character for them to ask for more materials. Add to that the fact that no one posted after that initial grouping of 5 and no one ever came forward in the forums....

It does not say GRFP but it has an odd downtime of something like 1am-5am EST. The actual message is available in last year's thread around March 28th. Way too early, stop freaking out.

Awards have been announced around March 28-29 the last 2 years, well in advance of the official press release.

I'm curious why you think this only applies to first-time applicants.

Nope, seems useful and seems to fall into my lock/questionable/hosed theory.

Guys...on the grad results forum there are posts saying that applicants received NSF GRFP solicitations "requesting additional information in the form of a 1pg statement." This is new...What does this mean, lol? http://www.thegradcafe.com/survey/index.php?t=m&pp=250

With next to no information to go on, who knows! Sit and wait and hope they show up to provide some more info. In the meantime, take it as a good thing that you weren't asked to clarify your proposal.

This is potentially a serious problem or potentially no problem at all. Go talk to your schools financial aid office and/or a financial professional, not an internet forum.

For graduate school purposes, you are an independent.

At the beginning of the 2014–15 school year, will you be working on a master’s or doctorate degree  program (such as an M.A., M.B.A., M.D., J.D., Ph.D., Ed.D., graduate certificate, etc.)?    Did you answer Yes to any of the questions?  If so, then for federal student aid purposes, you’re  considered to be an independent student and do not have  to provide information about your parents on the FAFSA.

For your sake, I really, really hope you get as far away from home as possible and practise some growing up and independence. Good luck.

The part where you said now that your "best friend" is pregnant you don't want to continue your friendship - at a time when she could probably seriously benefit from having a good friend around - is where I stopped caring about what you want for yourself. You have a lot of maturing to do, and you need to stop making yourself the center of the universe. It's beyond unattractive.

Loric, please stop with these posts. You're turning into a troll that really does deserve the down-votes you're getting.

Wow, you actually prompted me to post again..

    A) We are not all scientists, thank you very much.

Have you MET the people who hang out around here? They live for academia, not because they give even the slightest crap about science, world peace, or anything altruistic. They want gold stars and if someone with a higher rank isn't patting them on the head they don't understand how they can be allowed ti exist.

Frankly, your thread was comforting to see - i'd written pretty much everyone here off as an absolute jack wagon a week or so ago - but it's good to know not EVERYONE is insane or misguided or whatever the heck is wrong with these people and the way they think it's ok to think and place priorities.

A first I thought it was the stress that made people completely unpleasent, but the deeper I dug the more fundamental character flaws were exposed. "I did "broader impact" (aka: community service but for grad school apps) to boost my applications.." - Heaven forbid they do it for.. i dunno.. the sake of helping others. My colleagues were aghast to learn of the nonsense I found in the grad school applicant ranks.. further they were saddened by how rampant it is.

So bravo to you for not being a total douche nozzle. Here's hoping you get in, and they get the serving of reality they seem to desperately need. We know it wont work out fairly like that, but sometimes apparently adcomms do give applicants the "sniff" test and sometimes weed out the ones who seem to be completely full of it.

Note: In the end, it's better to be a grad school applicant than an undergrad applicant.. lest you be mowed down by the helicopter parents that run rampant on those forums.

Unless something has changed after your disqualification, you can still log in to the portal and look at your completed application form. Links are provided to each of your essays in the slot they were uploaded. I would suggest you double check before emailing anyone (which won't do you any good, anyway).

It is not unethical unless she agreed to write a letter with the direct intention of never submitting to sabotage the application. It is, however, HIGHLY unprofessional regardless. This woman, purposefully or not, is responsible for your disqualification. If she is someone that you will need to maintain contact with for future applications (which is sounds like is the case, as your thesis adviser), it is absolutely worth having a discussion with her to try and find out if it was an accident or if she has reservations about writing a strong letter. In the event that it was either malicious or the result of a reluctance to support you, you NEED to find out because it means you need to replace her in your applications ASAP. Personally (and especially depending on how many application opportunities you have left), I'd be livid and I totally sympathize with your position, PhDplease.

I agree with Blue's assessment about NSF's response. I've heard similar situations pop up before and they are pretty strict about their deadlines. I can't imagine the fact that they extended the deadline by days will make them any more sympathetic. However, Blue, I disagree that the 5 slots explanation is an "excuse." You have 5 slots as a contingency for just this situation. NSF gives you the flexibility to avoid this problem from the start and the onus is on YOU to win the award, not for THEM to give it to you.
