My scores were E/E, VG/VG, and E/E. I received a fellowship. It all just seems so random. The first and third reviews are glowing, but the middle reviewer's response is so scathing that I'm amazed they even gave me VGs. They sound like a real curmudgeon. I guess it doesn't matter how productive the comments are, though, since I don't have to do it again...

I do have a question, though: I was offered an award in cultural anthropology, but the program I'll be attending this year is actually a sociology program. I've heard that you can change your project focus, but I assume it's not quite as easy to change your entire award area...

I gave up and went to bed, thinking it was all a false alarm. Awful surprised to find the e-mail in my inbox this morning, but it was sure nice to wake up to--I got one! Congratulations to the other winners!

Just logged into Fastlane and pulled up the Awardee List, and the subheading underneath the search functions now reads "2012 Awardee List" instead of "2011 Awardee List," like it said this morning. I really think this is it...

Seriously, bro. If this is a false alarm, I will be SO INCREDIBLY PISSED.

AUGGHH. YOU GUYS. IT'S ONLY AN HOUR AWAY.

So, I caved and called NSF too, and got a slightly different answer. The woman who helped me said they're swamped with calls about it, but nobody knows anything official yet. She says that there is, quote, a "reasonable probability" that results will come out tonight, but the official announcement isn't made at GRFP headquarters until a few hours before the uploading begins, so she can't confirm for sure. She also said that once the decision to announce is official, an announcement will be posted at www.nsfgrfp.com, so we have something else to obsess about and check compulsively...

NSF runs on Eastern time, right? So for those of us on the West Coast, the proposed window is actually 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.? Which means I can log in and check as soon as I get home from work? *tears out hair*

I'm at work for the next 10 hours. I'm going to be just useless today. I might go buy some NyQuil to pound when I get home and just sleep through the whole thing. If this is a false alarm I'm gonna be SO PISSED OFF.

03/29/12 - FastLane will be unavailable from 11:00 PM ET Thursday March 29th - 5:00 AM ET Friday March 30th for scheduled maintenance. We apologize for any inconvenience. HOH-LEE POOP, GUYS. IT'S A FRIDAY. Edit: I see I am fashionably late to this party. My bad.

Off to Ann Arbor! Huzzah!
-
Hey, man-- I declined Chicago's offer this morning. Best of luck!

Has no one heard anything from Columbia? Results page says they usually notify acceptances by phone in early February, and send the bulk of their rejections around the 16th. Are they just running late this year?
-
I guess I'm a little unusual--my undergraduate major was sociology, but I've applied to both sociology and sociocultural anthro graduate programs. Waiting to hear back from Columbia sociology and Harvard anthro, as well as the anthro program at NYU. Solidarity, man! Hang in there--best of luck!

I know exactly how you feel. I'm waiting on Harvard and Columbia, of all places, and I just wish they'd get it over with so I can start planning the move to somewhere I've actually been accepted.

Not surprised, but still pretty bummed about Northwestern. I contacted POIs ahead of time, and they all said it sounded like I'd be a good fit. Even though I'm excited about my other acceptances, getting shut down by Berkeley AND Northwestern is pretty disheartening. Guess I'll be holding out hope for that sweet, sweet NSF money--maybe external funding will turn the tides...

Campus Visiting Days at Various Schools (this year and last year...)
Nic42 replied to Jeff Swindle's topic in Sociology Forum
Chicago's visit days are March 6th and 7th this year, officially, but the director also mentioned in the letter that there will be an ethnographer's conference held on campus on the 8th and 9th, if admits would like to hang around. -
See, that's what I thought, too--but if you search the results for Northwestern anthropology, there are only two interview requests posted for this year, and only one is listed as cultural. Could it be possible that someone just selected the wrong program listing from the drop-down menu? (Answer: no, of course not. The odds against such a thing are astronomical. Hope springs eternal...)

Hey guys--this is probably naive of me to ask, but does Northwestern interview ALL potential acceptances? The Department website doesn't say anything about even requesting interviews; however, the website for their medical anthro program says they interview THOSE candidates. Are all the interview entries on the results page for medical candidates? If I'm cultural, should I be writing Northwestern off since I haven't received an interview request?

I know, the waiting is killing me, too--I'm still waiting to hear back from four other places, and the suspense is just ungodly. SO glad my POI decided not to torture me by drawing out the inevitable for another three weeks. I'd love to tell you more, but I have NO IDEA whether demography decisions have been made yet--I don't even know if they've drafted a waitlist yet. I also don't know whether they've notified all of those accepted--I just know that I, personally, didn't make the cut. Sorry I can't be of more help! As for my research interests, I do primarily qualitative work around identity formation and the micro-level impact of social movements. I've also got a pretty solid foundation in gender and sexuality studies, disability studies, and queer theory, and have done some regionally-focused fieldwork in West Africa concerning queer identity formation processes, particularly in Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Thanks for the condolences--I've been accepted to two other programs with full funding, and am still waiting to hear back from four others, so it's not as much of a letdown as it would've been last week. From the e-mail, it sounds like all acceptance letters have already gone out--I haven't received a formal rejection letter yet, but admits have been contacted. I can e-mail back and ask for greater clarification if others are particularly concerned.

Really, really nice personalized rejection from a POI at Berkeley--but full acceptance with funding at Michigan and U of Chicago, and still waiting to hear back from 4 more schools! Now that I've gotten positive news from SOMEWHERE, I'm a lot less devastated about the Berkeley rejection than I thought I'd be. Anyone else in at Chicago or Ann Arbor?
-
Hi, guys! De-lurking for a minute to let y'all know that Berkeley acceptances seem to have been finalized. I got a very, VERY nice rejection letter from a POI telling me that although I was one of the last to be cut, they had 322 applications for 12 spots and accepted students were already notified. Congrats to those who got in, and commiseration with those who didn't--you're in good company!
