  1. You can find out by asking your graduate assistant, because SSHRC competition stats aren't department specific. But, check out SSHRC proactive disclosure docs: http://www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca/transparency-transparence/disclosure-divulgation/grants-subventions/2013/july_2013.pdf By searching through it using the name of your university as a keyword, you can find out how many SSHRCs any particular university has received. Then it becomes a guessing game trying to figure out which SSHRC proposal titles in the document could be from students in your department. But then again you have to also find out how many made it to the national competition and how many applied in total.
  2. I usually say to my non-academic friends that it's 35k or 20k/year and I'm waiting to find out if I won...everyone understands money!
  3. My pleasure. I'm in the capital region, so I'll be one of the first to receive my letter, and will report back immediately! Until then, let's keep this thread alive and share any insider information we may come across
  4. It did, by logging into the Research Portal at https://portal-portail.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/s/login.aspx
  5. Today I received an update from my university regarding SSHRC competition results notifications: "...SSHRC...should directly inform PhD students of their results through the mail in late April." If this statement is accurate, then the timing of notifications remains similar to previous years. This university media release also indicates that the MA SSHRC applicants will received their results as scheduled, on April 1st. I hope that this info helps to eliminate some of the uncertainty, although the wait remains just as long.
  6. I don't think this is a valid assumption. As you probably already know, MA and PhD SSHRC adjudication processes are completely different and independent of one another. So I wouldn't think that our notifications got bushed back or forward because of MA SSHRC delays. In fact, Ph.D. SSHRCs have always heard back before MA SSHRC and this year the timing seems to have reversed,
  7. I still find it odd that while the other two Tri-Council agencies -- CIHR and NSERC -- have set dates for notifying the applicants, April 15th and April 1st respectively, SSHRC is unable to provide even an approximate date.
  8. I spoke to the grad assistant in my department and she estimated that SSHRC notifications will be mailed out mid-April. I really don't think that any university department knows for sure when this will happen, and maybe not even SSHRC admins themselves.
  9. Good thinking crimsoc. I'll pay a visit to my department in the next couple of days to see if the grad coordinator has a specific date that she will be receiving the competition results. I'll report back.
  10. We all know that our government loves taking its "administrative time," so I wouldn't hold our breath.
  11. Hi Foreign Guy, I don't know a lot about the Vanier Scholarship, but I know that Vanier applicants are notified around the same time as SSHRC applicants -- sometime in April. Too bad there is no thread on Grad Cafe about Vanier. More information about it is available here: http://www.vanier.gc.ca/eng/selection_committee_guide-comite_selection_lignes.aspx
  12. Profs from all over Canada gather in Ottawa for 1 week to adjudicate SSHRC Ph.D. applications. MA SSHRC are now university-administered and SSHRC PDFs applicants have already been notified (end of February).
  13. I would go by their Twitter feed and/or postmark! Ottawa peeps should receive them first
  14. If history is any guide, it will be the end of April, so I'll put $10 on the last week of April .
  15. It's possible, since MA applicants will be notified April 1st, and MA SSHRCs are usually notified later than Doctoral SSHRCs. Following this tradition, it would be logical to think that we'd receive our letters this month. But, MA SSHRCs are notified using the Research Portal, whereas we'll be receiving our letters via regular mail. And as you said crimsoc, the adjudication process is much different for MA vs Ph.D. applications. Realistically, I don't think that we will hear back before April, at least according to my university. It would be a welcomed miracle if this happened!
  16. Hey, sorry about the disappointing news! The Trudeau Scholarship is far more competitive than SSHRC, so that's not any indication of your future SSHRC outcome. I wish it were possible that we all got SSHRCs!!
  17. I'm with you crimsoc and Safferz! Working on my comps, marking papers, waiting for results of 3 other scholarships that I applied for that will be released before SSHRC. The little bird told me that SSHRC would notify the departments on April 1st, but I don't have a way to confirm it. Edit: CGS-M results will be released on April 1st via the Research Portal, and since we all applied for Doctoral Awards the old fashioned way (i.e. through our universities), we may hear later in April.
  18. Congrats on securing the fellowship! I'm actually applying for a doctoral SSHRC, so I don't really know much about PDFs. But I do know that notification dates vary year to year for CGS/PDFs, and yes it would be great if we all heard earlier from whatever tri-council agency we applied to. My university advised me that SSHRC will be releasing doctoral award results in April. Last year it was the last week of April. I don't think this date will change by much this year. You can always try emailing them and explaining your situation, maybe they'll give you more than a roundabout answer that we usually get from them.
  19. Tri-council Postdoctoral Fellowship results are usually announced in February, whereas doctoral awards results are released in April. SSHRC/CIHR/NSERC have Twitter accounts and they usually post and announcement when results are mailed out.
  20. Congrats to the direct applicants making it to the next round! Let's keep our fingers crossed for each other.
  21. SSHRC notifies both A and B-listed candidates by mail, and roughly around the same time. It will be a thin envelope containing 1 page, if I remember correctly (I was a direct applicant once).
  22. Thanks for sharing oxforddphil. Have you applied to SSHRC before? I swear I've seen you on one of the Grad Cafe forums either last year or the year before.
  23. I agree that while no particular group of SSHRC applicants will bear the brunt of funding cuts, I am still not completely convinced that the cuts are distributed in a somewhat uniform manner across SSHRC's programs. Decisions are made at the federal level to determine which of SSHRC's areas are to grow and which are to wither. Of course, there is a political agenda that dictates what "priority" research areas should be enhanced, meaning that some programs will likely see reduced budgets. Luckily, doctoral scholarships/fellowships have had either consistent federal funding or a slight increase in funding in the last few years, so there is no reason for concern just yet!
  24. You might be right, but $14 million a year budget cuts could have some immediate and severe consequences. Here's an article by the CAUT I found recently: http://www.cautbulletin.ca/en_article.asp?articleid=3450. Out of the three Tri-Council agencies, SSHRC seems to be suffering the most from funding cuts: 10% between 2007 and 2012.
