Who's Applying for Fall 2012? Where are you Applying?
ak1 replied to litjust's topic in Education Forums
Thanks! Will drop in an email! Even I haven't heard from them since I applied. Did say anything about when they'd start sending out decisions? -
Happens! What's your number one school, btw?

Congratulations dm242! -
I also think that the people on the admissions committee have been there long enough to tell the difference between applicants who're really into the programme and those who've applied just as a safety net. For example, while I wrote extremely personalised statements for Penn and Harvard, for Stanford and NYU, I wrote generic statements, mostly recycling what I had for Penn and Harvard. It's only now that I look back at them do I realise how completely uninterested I sound!

Somebody tried to sell me the same thing too! Something about how Columbia, Penn, Harvard and Stanford end up accepting the same or at least same kind of people. That's just not true! The supposed 'competitive' schools are all looking for different kind of people. Best of luck for Stanford! Hope you get in!

Hi n2011! Congrats on Stanford! Penn will respond to you in exactly 4 weeks. That's one of the most wonderful things about them - they don't torture you much! I accepted my offer from Penn late last week, as it was my first choice school so it made no sense waiting. I'm in for IEDP too. The scholarship and assistantship they offered me covers around 1/4th of the tuition. I plan on taking a loan for about 20000 USD and using up all of my savings! It is a hefty loan, especially for people from India and Pakistan. I intend on working in the subcontinent but am not sure if I will return immediately after my Masters. As far as the pros and cons of a loan go, it really depends on how much money you can contribute towards your education. A loan of over 30k would be very difficult to pay off, if you intend on working with Pakistani NGOs etc. However, international organisations pay very well, so if you're headed there, a biggish loan might make sense. It really depends on how useful you think your time at your school would be. Weighing the pros and cons, I came to the decision that Penn was worth it because of the exposure I'd get there. And the faculty is brilliant! What other schools have you applied to, btw? -

A friend of mine heard from Stanford ICE last night. Just thought I'd let you know! Haven't heard anything myself though! Super nervous now! -

The PhD or the Masters programme? -
Thanks!

I was just going to start a similar thread! For me, I guess, it'll be programme. I'd go to the school that offers me best return on investment. That could as easily be Penn as UCLA or Syracuse. Wherever you get maximum for what you're putting in.

Nope! Not yet! Can you send me the link?

Hello people! I'm a prospective IED/P student from India. I applied to Penn, Harvard, Stanford and NYU for their IED/P programmes. Got accepted to Penn and will most probably take it up too because of its association with UNESCO. Which schools are the rest of you all leaning towards? Just need some clarity before I finally accept Penn!

Ya I guess that would be the smart thing to do! Thanks wannabeaphd! -
Hi betty buzz-kill ! I'm in the same situation! Same amount of scholarship too! Wondering how I'll manage! What kind of job offers can I expect at after passing out from IEDP at Penn?
-
I'm actually copying this from another thread because I couldn't bear the idea of typing the whole thing again! I know you're not a Masters student, but I realllllyyy wanted your opinion on the whole thing! Hey everybody! I'm a prospective MEd student from India. Completely new here, so will start of with my list! Applied: Harvard (IEP), Penn (IEDP), Stanford (ICE), NYU (IEDP), Lynch (Applied Developmental Psychology) Accepted: Lynch, Penn Rejected: None so far My first option is Penn, partly because of the exposure it'll have to UNESCO now that a chair has been established at IEDP, their international internships and their UNESCO Fellowship for students from developing countries. I also got a scholarship worth 10000 USD. Also, the fact that its an Ivy doesn't hurt. But the lure of Harvard is ever present! I don't know if I should wait or just go ahead and accept my offer from Penn! For international students, there's the additional long-ish process of getting an I-20 and a F-1 visa, so the sooner you start, the better. To wait or not to wait - its just such a conundrum! Also, I want to move on to a PhD immediately after the completion of my degree, so I'm looking into that too and the sooner I have some clarity about where I'm headed, the better for preliminary PhD research. I have 2 years of experience in education (and overall) and a previous Masters (in Journalism though). What do you think my chances for getting accepted to a good university for a PhD would be? Right after my Masters, that is?

Hi! I'll be attending Penn GSE this fall and was wondering if someone could help me locate good areas to live in around Penn. I'm not too keen on graduate housing and am on a tight budget. I don't mind sharing the place with another grad student. Also, I'm an international student and will be moving in from India. Thanks!
