What is it like to have a Graduate Assistantship?
SunsetHarbor replied to Gdcovme's topic in The Bank
I am a GSA at University of Washington. I work for the IT department teaching professors and students about software used in the classroom. My hours are very flexible and the benefits are amazing. The biggest issue is balancing work and school. I took less classes then I would have otherwise and not that involved in department activities. Most of my friends are other GSAs, so great way to meet people. I am in a program that has intensive internship hours plus classes, that has been very challenging to book all my hours. I basically work 6 days a week, but other GSAs in different departments have less commitments. I think it is 100% worth it. -
Anyone apply to one of the VA PSR Fellowships? Heard anything? http://www.va.gov/oaa/fellowships/psychosocial-rehab.asp

I emailed with the Director of Admissions (they made a mistake on my early decision app, sigh) and she assured me we would find out this week. I am guess they will wait until tomorrow to give everyone the weekend to process before the office opens again. Good luck!!!!
-
Still no word, the admissions person who was looking into what happened to early decision applicants that weren't notified is out for the rest of the week! No one in the office is able to follow-up. I guess worse case scenerio, some early decision got pushed into the regular decision pool for whatever reason. The waiting continues. Makes me with they just stuck with one deadline!

Also, the assistant said that everyone had been contact on Thursday one way or the other -- so if you weren't contacted that may actually be a good thing. I have heard of rejections going out.
-
I also applied early decision and did not hear anything from UW on Thursday. I called on Friday; the director of admissions emailed late Friday to say she would look into what happened and get back to me Monday. I got the impression from her assistant that this had happened to a few people. Just keep following up with them. Good luck.

I applied last year as well but had to delay a year, and reapply. Last year they sent a personal email with a giant "Congratulations" in opening text. So you don't have to worry about checking the online application system (though I keep doing it anyways)....

I also applied early action to UW-Seattle day program and no news yet...

Can we talk about the wicked expensive gorilla in the room?

I am having the same issue with UW. I think we will get financial aid packages in April, but not sure if these will only be loans. It sounds like all the SSW grant based assistance occurs end of May. Seems backwards that we are asked to make decisions without the most important piece of information - what the costs will be. All the schools I applied to, I would be happy to attend, distinguishing factor is funding. May need to accept and leave deposits at Maryland, UW and Minnesota? -

This is a question on financial aid packages and paying deposits to multiple schools. For many of the schools I am looking at they only process financial aid awards (not loans) after you pay your deposit or a month or two after deadline for decision. Has anyone paid multiple deposits to wait out and see their full financial aid package? -
I just received my offer today - so they are sending out currently. Not sure the timeline on financial aid packages.

2012 US News Social Work Program Rankings
SunsetHarbor replied to roxyshoe's topic in Social Workers Forum
Just be aware that these rankings are based on the often subjective perception of SW deans, administrators and faculty and not on anything else - for example, % completing program, % finding employment etc. Here is an interesting article which speaks more in depth on methodology. http://sweduc.wordpress.com/2012/01/22/us-news-msw-rankings/
