  1. You're taking your talents to South Beach!? You should have held a one hour documentary on the History Channel about your entire academic career. Then in the last 30 seconds of the documentary, say something about how great you are and say you're taking your talents and methodologies to South Beach. Okay, I kid. Can't pass up an opportunity to mock "The Decision." But seriously, congratulations. That's awesome. If you ever get time out of the library catch some rays for me. It's looking like I'll be in the Midwest.
  2. So. Does anyone feel compelled to lay claim to that nice, shiny Georgia acceptance?
  3. IT'S MY DECISION, AND I NEED IT NOW!!! ...if you've been waiting long-term and you need to know now- CALL D.G.S. WENTWORTH- 877-KNOW-NOW 877-KNOW-NOW? 877-KNOW NOW ...okay it's official. The waiting has gotten to me. I've cracked.
  4. Well apparently it's also possible in Russia. Just keep creating new president-esque positions and side step the constitution!
  5. You know, the mark of a true historian is a 49th percentile or lower on the GRE. That means I'll have a tenured chair and 12 monographs by 35
  6. Well, I am not quite sure the details of my funding (specifics to arrive via mail *fingers crossed* soon), but it seems like some programs give you additional funding for summer work or allow you the summers off. I know a couple of my friends who are students at my school are planning on supplementing their funding with summer jobs.
  7. Okay so now, really, begins the first week of March. Silent remaining schools, would you kindly send unto me your official decision upon my application? Please? With a cherry on top?
  8. Waiting definitely sounds like a good idea in that case. Thanks!
  9. I second this question. As I asked in the ChitChat forum. But I do know one grad student who does 10 hours a week working for our local library and another who works in retail. I am really leaning toward a menial job moonlighting as a master burger flipper to make an extra 100 or so a week.
  10. So does anyone have any experience with part time work in grad school? I've been told by numerous people that it's beyond busy- and make no mistake I can fully believe it- but then I also have a TA who does 15-20 hours a week in retail alongside grad school, claiming that the mindless work is a nice break. Thoughts?
  11. Donde esta la biblioteca!!!! Congrats!
  12. Okay so for all of the Spanish Empire and Latin America scholars. I have your daily dose of language prep:
  13. You're absolutely right. I should have looked at your signature before I sent that. You have a ton of solid programs out there. and *knocking on wood* the silence from UVA is a good thing I should think. A lot of the profs here would have probably suggested UVA over Harvard (maybe that's just an anti-Harvard persuasion in our department though???) But Definitely chin up! There's still a month!
  14. Well, then you'll have a killer application and extra time to develop your CV! Learn some crazy new language like that African click language. I'm not sure how that would help your scholarship, but it might be a very interesting conversation piece for interviews =) And there is the official UVA rejection! Figured this was coming. It's about time.
  15. It already did its waitlisters so I bet it already did its acceptances.
  16. My doctor asked me what I was majoring in. I said, "History." He paused as if I had said, "cotton candy making," and said, "What the heck are you going to do with that!? I hate history."
  17. First, congrats to qbluecheers! That's awesome! Second, I would like to turn into a one track record and say again: Where is UNC CH? Ugh.
  18. Ok, cool. Thank you. April cannot come fast enough.
  19. Congrats SimpleTwist! That's awesome!
  20. Another random Bloomington admit? What is going on over there? And my Ohio State status is still in review. Are people checking the main graduate admissions website or is there a specific history dept website to check?
  21. Wow, really? I think 3/3 would make me more impressed by/ confident in your scholarship.
  22. I think that really depends on the program, and obviously the impression which you make upon the faculty (I'm not saying you'd make a bad impression, I'm just saying that weighs heavily). I'm still in undergrad but the DGS here at my school wouldn't let me apply for our PhD and was somewhat reluctant to let me apply for the MA because it would be considered "academically incestuous" and damage my chances of being hired. I've heard schools prefer more variety in your degree. But then again, anyone who does an accelerated PhD is going to have the MA and PhD from the same school. So I guess what I'm trying to say is, it depends on the program and the DGS or your POI would probably be more than willing to provide insight into their department's opinion.
  23. Fact. Placement should matter first and foremost. If a prof has 100% success in tenure-track placements, then you know what you got to do!
