  1. Hi Leuco, I have a friend who is also waiting to hear from them. She doesn't have an account so I lurk and keep an out here for her. When she called Emory they said they each subfield does their admissions on their own schedule and didn't how far along micro/molgen was in its application process. They also said that they do a sort of rolling admissions process, so interviews will trickle out over the next month as they get further into the pile or they get negative feedback from the first rounds of interviewees. Hope this helps and good luck! -Llama
  2. I echo the sentiment of waiting as well. On addendum- It's time consuming, but it also couldn't hurt to read an article or book by the POI in question and letting them know you liked it and why. It shows you're familiar with their work and seriously interested rather than just throwing emails at the wall to see what sticks.
  3. Medicine indeed! That's a fantastic program and you will do great coming from there, SToF. Congratulations! Now, if only your mascot were something that could actually be visualized (what is a Hoosier anyway?). And the 3rd year deal sounds perfect! Well done, SToF.
  4. Haha, yes, again I am asking for the same friend. Toto, I don't think we're in Kansas anymore.
  5. Way to go SToF!!! Dude, you are raking in the acceptances! Congratulations!
  6. The email was quite elusive. It asked about attending an interview and was addressed to other people as well. Oddly, the "interview" dates offered were post 4/15 deadline. Thus far the program hasn't given any more information.
  7. Right well hopefully it's for some particular kind of fellowship. One can hope at least. It was strange. They didn't say what it was for, just "Can you come for an interview"
  8. One step closer to the end of your journey! But seriously, wait it out on W&M. That would be the be all to end all program and, let's face it, 18k in Williamsburg goes WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY farther than 20k in Boisston (trying to write a heavy NE accent- not exactly working lol).
  9. Hi Everyone. What would an interview after an acceptance mean?
  10. Hi everyone, I am a history major going to graduate school for history, but one day I might like to dip into linguistics and get an MA in the field. I have experience in several languages (French, Spanish, German, Arabic) though no formal linguistics training. Can anyone offer insight into what I will need in order to get an MA? Thanks! Llama
  11. Goliath down you looketh tired! HAHAHA
  12. Undergrad Institution: Large Midwest university that is not exactly known for its lib arts programs. US News ranks it outside of the top 50. Senior Thesis: I wrote one on a subject that pertained directly to my specific graduate school interests. Honors Program: Departmental honors. Major(s): History Minor(s): Philosophy GPA in Major: 3.92 Overall GPA: 3.48 Position in Class: Closer to the top within my major. Type of Student: White male. GRE Scores (revised/old version): Q: 690 V: 670 W: 5.0 Subject: TOEFL Total: (if applicable, otherwise delete this) Research Experience: Just my thesis and some research papers. Awards/Honors/Recognitions: outstanding history department junior award Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Secretary and then president of PAT, technical writer for a different department Any Miscellaneous Accomplishments that Might Help: Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: Applying to Where: 1 Top 10 PhD program, 4 top 20 PhD programs, 4 top 30 PhD programs, 4 top 50 PhD programs Research Interests & Areas of Focus: Early American cultural and political Languages: Spanish- speak, read, write; French- read, German- some reading Letters of Recommendation: Very flattering, mix of 1 full prof, 1 associate, 2 assistants. All very familiar with my work. Statement of Purpose: approximately 1000 words for most schools. I stated with whom I would like to work (2-3 profs per school), briefly how I came to want a career in history, a good bit about my honors thesis, a quick summary of my preparation, a paragraph about my specific research goals, and a very brief (3 sentences because I ran out of room) about why that institution/program was a good fit for me. Writing Sample: A condensed version of my senior thesis Communication with POIs: I emailed all of them. 1 conversation in person, 3 conversations by phone, most replied with brief and polite emails, three never responded. 1 acceptance came from the personal conversation, 2 acceptances came from the email exchanges, 1 waitlist came from an email exchange, and 1 waitlist came from one of the no-replies. Lessons Learned from Application Process: If the professor invites you to visit- do it. I was unable to make trips to follow up with 2 of the phone calls and, though the conversations were long and fantastic and really gave me the sense that I would get it, I was flat rejected. If I had visited it might have worked out. Results: 1 top 30 acceptance, 2 top 30 waitlists, 1 unfunded top 50 acceptance, 1 funded top 50 acceptance, 8 rejections.
  13. Wow. I think I need to take a speed reading seminar. Thanks for the heads up, my friends!
  14. To all of you lucky scholars who have experienced graduate school in history, how many pages a week should I expect to read? I have heard a book per week per class is a good baseline. Thoughts? Thanks! Llama
  15. Anyone planning on going to Georgia? If so, PM me por favor.
  16. They sent me an email this morning telling me my status was now available on my online application. But indeed, UGA emailed me with a funded masters! Though, as Taybaxter has said, WashU is still the leader!
  17. Finally UNC officially delivers the bad news
  18. It's okay, Oseirus. They had a good run. Life apparently hates the Tar Heels, though. Preseason favorites for national title- BAM! your 2 guard's ACL is torn. Okay still in contention for the national title- BAM! Your backup point guard and best perimeter defender's ACL is torn. Okay we we could still win the ACC tourney and get to the final four- BAM! your best rebounder and defensive player of the year's wrist is sprained. Okay, well we lost the ACC tourney, but we'll get him back and will contend for the final four- BAM! Your Bob Cousy award finalist, assist leading, ultra efficient point guard's wrist is broken. HA! Oh. Stillman White to the rescue!!!
  19. I bet they welcome you to do so. They seem keen on asking you, perhaps you make a good impression and jump up the list? On another note, if they won't make time for you to pop in and look at the quality of their facilities, then maybe they won't make time for you to do your research? My POI at my current top choice met with me before the application cycle even began and to me, that says he is someone who is always going to make time for me- something that is incredibly important to all of this.
  20. Well its a well-known fact the best way to pick your bracket is to assign one team even and the other odd and shoot dice. If an odd number comes up you go with the odd and if it's even you go even. With Florida State out I'm down to 5/8 of my Elite Eight remaining and 3/4 of my Final Four. Seminoles. I blame Oseirus.
