  9. Because I asked the exact same question when I was applying for my master degree 3 years ago, and for my PhD this year. The information I posted earlier was based on the recommendations I received from the professors who were on the admission committee at my current school, and for the department of chemistry.
  10. 1 page long, single-spaced with 12 font size. Do not cover the materials that you've already mentioned in your CV or resume.
  11. It will only matter if you planning on teach or starting a research group at a high-ranked school.
  12. omg yes, I might even take out a loan to buy one when needed. my current laptop is working just fine but it doesn't have retina display....and I want retina display....so I can watch TV shows and movies in high definition with it...
  13. I need to get myself a tailor. I have never used one before, and I have some old clothes that I don't wear anymore because they're just too big for me, I lost about 40 lbs since Jan
  14. Have you talked to any other current PhD students at your school? For my master thesis proposal in chemistry, it was around 20 pages (single-spaced, 12 font, figures, tables, 10-20 references from journal articles or textbooks), however, I know couple of people only had around 5-10 pages for their proposal and they were able to get away with it. a typical Master thesis consists of 3 chapters (minimum), 70-100 pages, double-spaced, 12 font, figures, tables, and w/ 30+ reference a typical PhD dissertation consists of 5 chapters (minimum), 150+ pages, double-spaced, 12 font, figures, tables, and w/ 50+ reference
  15. What did you mean if you're not sure if they're correct or not? Were you talking about the format of your thesis? layout..or the contents? If I were you I would go ahead and start write something (even if they're wrong), and if the advisor doesn't like what I wrote I could always re-edit/re-arrange my chapters and sub-chapters. You need to show him/her that you've at least tried.
  16. A draft of your dissertation or research proposal...? You can go to your departmental library and find some published dissertations from former students, and use them as guideline/template.
  17. Yes, tuition waiver + base TAship or RAship + premium health insurance coverage. It's like a job but without the retirement benefits and if you're and outstanding applicant you'll get bonus (extra pay) from a fellowship.
  18. Thank you! I will need to get myself some khakis pants because I don't have any, same for formal wear. As for polo-shirts, I tried to buy some from Polo Ralph before, but they were just too big for my body size. I think I might need to get myself a professional tailor. I met a student at the Visitation Weekend, and he was "shocked" when I told him that I was an incoming PhD student because he thought I was only 16.
  19. hmm I think jeans should be okay, but I might have to get some new t-shirts, because the ones I have were from PacSun
  20. Hi guys, I have decided to donate a large portion of my current cloth collections to Salvation Army before school start in August. I haven't purchased any new clothes for about 7 years (when I graduated from high school). I think it's about time for me to ditch jeans and t-shirts and start dress more professionally. What's the typical budget for a new wardrobe (for men) for a graduate student? I found a website describing a typical wardrobe would cost around $300 to $500 (http://artofmanlines...nly-wardrobe-1/), but I don't want to wear anything fancy like the ones they listed on their website. Thank you, J.
  21. "You got accepted because you're Asian, you're a minority" I think Asians are the majority in the scientific community, especially in my field....
