  1. It does. It's best to apply a wide range of schools in term of ranking. It's good to aim high but it's also important to be practical. The ultimate goal of getting a PhD is that so you can get a job upon graduation. If you plan to go into industry, then a school's ranking doesn't really matter. There is another thing to think about. When I was applying for graduate schools last year, the first thing on my concern list was the location of the school. Safety and location should always comes before a school's ranking. Also, you want to go to a school that you know there is a higher chance for you to pass and complete your preliminary exam/research plan/thesis proposal/thesis defense/exit exam on time. do not bite off more than you can chew. Try to avoid schools that take in 50+ students each year because they also get rid of a lot of students during their second or third years and you don't want that.

  9. You should transfer to a PhD Chemistry program.... I've never been this stressed out in my life, we have so many projects/papers/proposals/presentations to do from the 3 classes we're required to take in our first year, along with teaching/grading/prepping, attending weekly departmental and divisional seminars (analytical, physical, biochemistry divisions), research plan planning, fellowships and grants searching, abstract writing, research manuscript writing, all in one semester It's okay though because I have Jesus by my side.
  10. The only AAs I know of from classes got their offer through the medical school. They got accepted the PhD program in Biomedical Engineering, and then transferred to PhD program in Chemistry after their first year. It's required by law (i.e. Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC)) that medical schools must accept a minimum amount of underrepresented minority (URM) students each year (i.e., AAs, Native America, Mexican, and some Women only). Marshall School of Medicine in West Virginia got put on probation last year because their student body wasn't diverse enough. You can google more information about it.
  11. Puuuuuuh-leeaze, I know you didn't just made it sound like it's so easy to get an offer from top schools like that. Someone's reality check must bounced.
  12. Yes, it would be easier for you to get in because you're a Hispanic. Nobody from my cohort class is a Hispanic nor an AA this year , it would also be easier for you to get scholarships and fellowships.
  13. Some people need to realize that only have a high GRE score or GPA won't get you an acceptance letter to a PhD program. PhD admission is a totally different ball game compared to undergrad admission =.=

      You got that right!

  14. I don't think it would affect you if you apply for a program that is in a completely different field than the one you're currently in. Try to avoid applying to the same school or the ones you've applied already. I mean, you could still apply them but then you would probably have to explain why you had to withdraw in your SOP.
  15. 4.5 ! Love my professors, new advisor and fellow classmates from my cohort class
  16. Happy Thursday! Almost done with this semester!

  17. Happy Tuesday! 2 more days until my next exam.

  18. You should apply to a minimum of 10 schools just to be safe. It has gotten VERY competitive to get into a fully funded program... One of my colleagues applied to 20 and only got 1 offer....
  19. Please visit http://studentdoctor.net/ for information related to professional schools. You should consider applying to Special Masters Programs (SMPs). SMPs are programs that are specifically designed for applicants who wish to enter medical schools eventually. Due to your low GPA score, it would be very difficult for you to get an offer from allopathic schools. However, you still have a shot for osteopathic schools though .
  20. Happy Monday! It's time to get more stuff done and drink more black coffee

  21. I think this is pretty standard. You can pretty much write whatever you want in your personal statement, as long as you can convince the admission committee that they should make you an offer. Talk about why you want to study I/O psychology and which professor(s) you would like to work with and why..etc.
  22. It depends. If you plan on getting a good job in the industry then focus on overall ranking, business people tends to focus on brand name more. If you plan on getting a good post-doc job and eventually become a professor, then focus on chemistry program ranking. If you plan on getting a good job or a good post-doc job, then focus on research fit and networking more than schools' rankings.
  23. Happy Saturday! Praise the Lord

  24. Happy Black Friday! more black coffee please

  25. Jesus and antidepressants are the only true friends in graduate school.
