2012 US News Social Work Program Rankings
arcoventry replied to roxyshoe's topic in Social Workers Forum
I believe Hunter was #26 not so long ago - This list shows it as tied with NYU at #16, which is a considerable feat considering the cost difference and the way cost factors into an MSW student's decision. To say you went to a Top 20 social work program and still have less than 20K in loans will be a great feeling! Thanks for the second link, Aleblanc. I will read through it when I get a free moment -
NYU- Silver School of Social Work

Katy8483, Hunter gave me 2 weeks as well. I asked for an extension and by the time they replied to me I was begging for forgiveness that it was late. $250 is a lot to prospective graduate students. If I get into NYU I'll lose that, not to mention the other schools we are waiting on! -

I submitted 12/22, but then they lost my transcript and my application was updated with "Application complete as of 2/14". Right now my application says "Your application is complete and sent to the Faculty Review Committee for review." I had to send in my $250 to Hunter, I was even late for the deadline holding out hope I'd hear from NYU but I don't want to risk not being able to go to either. -

I am waiting on NYU, I have been told the decision is coming "this week" for 3 weeks. I intend on working part time while in school. In NYC I have no idea how else people would afford to live, other than taking out an extra 30 grand in living expense loans. I currently work full time and wait tables at night, I will be leaving the full time job and continuing to serve 3-4 shifts a week. -
I'm not sure an MSW student can get a better deal, to be honest. Hunter carries a total cost of about $25,000, which is $10,000 less than a single year at NYU, Fordham or Columbia. Unless you get a external scholarship and merit or need-based aid from those other schools, the costs done even compare. You can take out loans for a max of $26,500 a year, which will do well to cover tuition and living expenses! Hunter hasn't updated their list of scholarships for this year, I am still pulling up 2011-2012 year, where we need 2012-2013.

Ahh, that I'm not sure about. If anyone finds anything, I second that I'd like to know as well.

Mine didn't say anything, I looked at least 5 times. Says, " Please note that you will not be able to pay your commitment deposit until March 19, 2012." Looks like 35%. http://mswprograms.c...ceptance-rates/

Does anyone know when their $250 commitment deposit is due? I am still waiting on NYU and am getting very worries I might miss the deadline and lose my place.

The Hunter interview is an interesting experiance - definitely different than any corporate interview I've ever had!! It's more of a discussion than an interview. I applied to NYU on 12/22, but my application was not completed until 2/14 due to a transcript problem. My app status just changed to "Your application is complete and sent to the Faculty Review Committee for review." I am checking it every 3 minutes, I am driving myself insane.

Hi az1, I have also been accepted into their program, I hope I can help you make a decision. Fordham's program is well-known for their clinical concentration. I went to their orientation and the admissions director, aside from being eccentric, was optimistic about job outlook and salary expectations. Out of the 6 programs I attended information sessions for MSW programs, she was the only presenter who did not avoid potential students' worries about money. Take that however you will; some people find it refreshing, others pretentious. When I look at all the programs for the "Top 4", NYU is probably the strongest and most flexible clinical program, while Columbia is less clinically focused. They seem to be more administration and social justice-focused. Fordham and Hunter's programs seem VERY similar to me - which is likely why Fordham's program seems to get lost a little. If given the choice between Hunter and Fordham, the extra cost might not be worth the perceived jump in prestige of the Fordham University name. Keep in mind, these are my feelings - I hope they help you! PS - I graduated from Fordham University in 2008 with a BS in Computer Science. I could not have been happier with my education there, and although I will most likely be attending Hunter this fall, it is for monetary reasons not anything against Fordham!

I still have not heard from NYU and I am getting very anxious. There were some issues with my application and it was not completed until recently, so I assume I am at the back the the queue. Has anyone gotten a yes or no?

rjose - This exact same thing happened to me. It was the morning of Feb 14, and I had to delay my day trip with the boy to hand-deliver an offical transcript!!! Thank goodness I live in Manhattan, and thank goodness I was OCD and ordered a billion extra copies from my undergrad school! I am very upset, because now it says my application was not completed until 2/14. I had spent a month thinking I would be getting a decision any day... [edit] I just realized you can multi-quote, sorry for the multiple postings x)

Hello, here are some stats of mine: Undergraduate: BS in Computer and Web Programming, Fordham University RH 2004 GPA: 3.5 Work experience: Fortune 500 sales exec/IT Network Architecture background - 5 years Social work experience: Volunteering at a crisis center in NYC, working with suicidal/mentally ill/depressed individuals. 10 hours/week for 1 year. LOR - Chair of CS department at Fordham, CTO of previous company, co-worker at current company. I am a career changer so I have the corporate/diverse background thing working for me. Without that, I probably would not have been considered with my social work experience (lack there of) alone. Not sure if this helps, but best of luck to you!!!

Hello! I know their phone system was down for about a week and they were behind entering information in their systems. I applied on 1/14, and was invited for an interview on 2/8. I heard back with an acceptance email exactly 1 week later. They seem to move quickly once that initial invitation is sent out. Good luck to you!!! If you want my stats or info about the interview just ask I can try and help

I applied to Fordham, Hunter, and NYU - submitted my apps January 14th. That was the day my last recommender sent in their letter. Hunter invited me for an interview 3 weeks after I submitted my application and I received my acceptance letter exactly 1 week after the interview. Fordham sent me an acceptance the day after I heard from Hunter. It has been about 6 weeks since I submitted my NYU app and still no word. If it makes you feel any better, there was a problem with NYU reporting on the application that they received my transcript - only for me to find out a month later they never actually got it after all. This is probably upsetting the time line for decision-making. Hope that helps!

I am really glad this thread is here. I applied to MSW programs in NYC - accepted to Hunter and Fordham, still waiting on a decision from NYU - and I have been having late night panic, random hysterics and bouts of depression for 3 months now. I am a non-traditional student in the fact that I have an established, successful sales career. I despise my current career and I am convinced going to graduate school and changing my life is what I want. I have been in the application process for exactly a year. But I am terrified I am making a bad decision, especially in this economy when social programs pay little and are cut easily. I don't know how to calm down and trust myself. I have it easier than a lot of people here who are moving across the country and leaving friends and boyfriends (kudos to you guys, I admire your courage!!). I am staying in-state, and have the emotional an a small bit of financial support from my boyfriend. But I am still losing sleep and terrorizing my friends and family with my moods :\
