  1. I went thought the application process two cycles ago, and decided to go for a terminal masters (mainly due to funding). Will my previous rejection from a school be counted against me as it comes to applying to the same school this upcoming application cycle?
  2. I was looking at USC, from what I can see they seem to be mostly focused on American. Is this what others have found also?
  3. Can i ask what classes you took? Im looking at a calc course now.
  4. Thanks, I will see if there are any summer classes I could take
  5. How much quantitative work would you suggest? I have pretty good Quant GRE scores. In my MA I haven’t taken math courses but I have taken PE and I tend to gear individual work (I.e. research papers/projects) in other courses towards Econ. However, I will only have maybe 1 or 2 courses on my transcript that are easily classified as quant courses. Any suggestions for my remaining two semesters of my MA? Or anything else I could do to show that I can in fact do quantitative work? I also use to tutor econ in undergrad. Not sure how much that would count.
  6. Any advice on other schools with strong political economy and comparative programs. Im looking anywhere in the top 25 range.
  7. Does anyone have any advice for good programs in political economy, specifically comparative? I have a list of a few schools, but I am trying to expand it a bit. UC Berkeley, Yale, Duke, and University of Michigan. These are all top ten schools, maybe someone can recommend a few others that I should take a closer look at (they do not have to be top 10!)
  8. umich would be my first choice actually, however, it is a very competitive prgram to get into.
  9. Does anyone have any advice on up and coming schools geared towards Political Economy and Comparative?
  10. This is only good for 3 months I noticed, may still be worth it I guess
  11. Thats great, I will probably do the online Kaplan service! Thanks for the advice
  12. Right, I think that is a good goal. thanks for the link!
  13. What does everyone think about the new GREs? Did anyone take classes to study for it? If so, which one and would you recommend taking a class? I feel as if the GREs is what would really stand in the way of any chance I would have of getting in anywhere, what scores are all of you aiming at? (realistically I mean)
  14. Why don’t you try to apply for History again? Not everyone gets in the first time, and this will give you a chance to make your application "better" Personally, I have wanted to go for my PhD in poli sci for years. I wouldn’t change my interest to, for instance, econ or history, if I were to not get in to a poli sci program the first time around. Think about the number of years you will be in school, and what it is that you want to do with your PhD after your done. What if you realize, after a year or two, that you just don’t like poli sci that much. Yes, history and poli sci are similar in some ways, however, they are two separate fields for a reason. As a undergraduate history and poli sci major, I can tell you that they are quite different, not just in the material taught but also the way that your expected to think, write, and research. Just don’t rush into such a huge decision simply because you were rejected in your first application cycle.
  15. Good idea, I am glad your starting it early. So where is everyone in the process right now? Im currently attempting to narrow down my list of schools a little more. Also, im slowly working my way towards studying for the GREs (again) something im not looking forward to
  16. Thats kind of how I felt too, dont think professors want to hear from hundreds of applicants each fall
  17. Thanks for all the advice! It’s extremely helpful to hear from people who have been through the process. Another question I have, did any of you visit the schools you applied to and/or get in contact with professors at the schools? For my MA program I was already in contact with a professor before I applied due to an open house I attended.
  18. Hello everyone Im looking to apply to phd programs this upcoming fall 2012. However, I was wondering how many schools would be advisable to apply to. Currently, I am attending an MA program and will graduate in 2013. Honestly, being a grad student, I am really worried about the cost of the applications. I know I need to apply to a good number of schools, but I just want some advice from some of you that have been through the process before. Also, if you have any other advice this early on in the application process such as: things to think about, things that you were happy you did/ didnt do, or things that you wish you would have done. Thanks so much!
