  1. I have a BA in English Translation and an MA in General linguistics. As there was no Bachelors degree in linguistics at the time i decided to attend the university, and i didn't know i'm a lover of linguistics, I chose English. the minute i started masters, i realize i'm in the right track. I have always had an interest in grammar of my own language (Persian), Arabic, English, and even French. That being said, syntax was my first priority even though i found semantics as being interesting and somehow related to syntax. MY GPAs aren't that stellar (3.8 for BA, and 3.5 for MA without considering two Fs), and my recent TOEFL score is 109. I'm now preparing myself for the GRE, and i will apply for Fall 2014 to at least 10 universities. My area of interest is cognitive linguistics, and i have written my thesis in grammatical voice in the framework of Langacker's cognitive grammar. I will apply to these universities: for PHD: Johns Hopkins (a long shot, i know) UCSD UCSB Michigan State Delaware Rice SUNY at Buffalo New Mexico for MA: UNC-CH Colorado at Boulder UC Davis I would appreciate your helpful comments.
  2. Hey, the only downfall to PBT version is that You can only take it three times a year in October, November, and February. Hope it helps!
  3. My native language is Persian, and i can speak English. I'm also interested in learning French. What i'd like to do is to work on different grammatical categories in Persian, and my area of interest is cognitive linguistics.
  4. I know so many international students being accepted to top universities (Cornell, UIUC, UTA, etc) with a 3. You'd better work on your writing sample and SOP.
  5. It's not that great, but the second link is what you might be looking for. The best material for the quantitative section is manhattan: http://www.amazon.com/Manhattan-GRE-Strategy-Guide-Vols/dp/1935707558
  6. Thanks for all your helpful comments. Unfortunately, MA programs are mostly unfunded and as an international student, I cannot afford to attend them. I have also been out of school for 8 years and my BA is in English translation with only 10 courses offered in linguistics. I think i have to focus on my writing sample as you said instead of striving to get published somewhere.
  7. Thanks for your helpful comments. A conference presentation is a lot easier, but unfortunately, i don't have the possibility to do so because of where i live. Working as an RA is also not available in a sense that it should be. No internships, no exchange programs, etc. I don't know how i can make my resume competitive compared to those studied at Ivy leagues and have all these possibilities. I can only focus on the GRE and TOEFL which might be waived for some and not the most important factor when applying. I think with just one article published in a journal, i can show how capable i am.
  8. financial document as you mentioned family ties such as old parents that you have to take care of a job offer from a company you are working in or anywhere else in your country saying they need you after graduation
  9. Hi all, I'm going to apply to PhD programs in linguistics next fall. I wonder if anyone has ever written a paper published in these journals before applying: http://science.thomsonreuters.com/cgi-bin/jrnlst/jlresults.cgi?PC=H&SC=OY. I just need to focus on those areas where needed. Thanks in advance
  10. try Magoosh. It's only $99 and covers all the sections with tons of video lessons and practice questions. I bet you won't regret it.<br />https://gre.magoosh.com
  11. I saw somewhere at their website that they fund MA students and the amount is $15000. Check their website and also the results page here to see what they offered last years.
  12. I'm also really interested in CU-boulder's program because it mainly is a major center of interdisciplinary research in cognitive-functional linguistics which is what i'm really interested in. Moreover, one can choose to specialize in many different areas and that's a plus. I also sent an e-mail to them regarding the availability of funding to international students and they told me it's not possible. Does anyone know whether it is possible to get some kinda assistantship after the second semester? my native language is Persian and i wonder if there is any kinda support for native speakers of certain languages.
  13. Hey friends, seeing the results page, i noticed an acceptance from Brown University. I wonder if i can get some information regarding the program and further insight into the masters in CL from the one who posted it. I'm interested in Cognitive Linguistics, and i also talked to professors at CWRU for the masters degree. I would really appreciate it if you could provide me with information if you got your masters there. To the others: Congratulations on your acceptances.
  14. I'm from a top-ranked university in Iran where i got my Masters in Linguistics. My target is the best universities in the US (likeeveryone else), but i think i cannot go straight from an unknown university into the best universities, so i decided to study another masters degree in a university where the opportunity for working par-time is available for international students, and the chances of getting scholarships after spending a semester or so is high. My area of interest is cognitive linguistics, and from my point of view, i have to put the highest value on the state i choose because it will make me be in contact with the best professors in my area of interest, and i also have the opportunity to attend conferences and show myself to them. Taking all these into account, i chose California (because of being in vicinity of UCLA, UCSD, UCSB, Berkeley, Stanford, etc). Searching for all the universities that aren't highly-ranked, i found SJSU. There i found a professor specializes in cognitive linguistics, and her name is among the most prestigious professors in this field of study in different great books.
  15. Hi everyone, I'm looking for some prestigious universities offering masters programs completely in English. I would appreciate your help.
  16. Hi for a person with no prior knowledge about math, which books do you recommend? i have the 8 sets of Manhattan GRE plus the official guide and Barron's. Thanks.
  17. I'm weak at the quantitative section. which one should i choose: Barron's or magoosh?
  18. It isn't a very top school. At first, i was dubious whether i get it wrong or not, then i asked them again, and they told me they will take into account many other things besides the GRE. I'm an international student, and it's not fair to compare native speakers' scores to non-native speakers'.
  19. I asked the graduate coordinator of SUNY at Buffalo for the master's degree in linguistics, and she told me the average score is 1500 overall for all three sections. I don't know how they calculate the analytical writing section, but i really feel disappointed. It isn't a very top school in my major.
  20. Arizona state university, MA with concentration in linguistics, No GRE
  21. Hi everyone, I was searching for the results of those being accepted, but there was no complete information such as GPA, GRE, TOEFL, ARTICLE, etc. I would appreciate it if you could show what is your scores and where have you been accepted. This way, we can conclude where to apply. Thank you very much in advance. Good Luck!
  22. Hi everyone i'm a new member and i'm from Iran. i got my BA in English language translation with the GPA of 3.87 and my MA from a well-known university in Iran with the GPA of 3.56. I'm really interested in cognitive linguistics and i'm going to write papers for 3 international conferences outside Iran. I'm now preparing myself for TOEFL and GRE though i'm not worried about TOEFl (above 610 PBT). My only concern is GRE which is a hard exam for a person whose first language isn't English. What i really want to do is getting another MA from a university in the US with cognitive science specialty. I think this way i have a better chance of being accepted in PhD program of top 10 universities. What is your idea about my condition? Do i have a chance of being admitted with full fund for MA? Thank you very much in advance n i'm happy to find all these successful persons in linguistics.
