Congratulations Inny!!! I'm from Vancouver and UBC will be great !

I'm also not from Oregon, but am in the PSU post-bac. I'm not quite sure what your letter means and I didn't receive a letter that says anything like that. Maybe inquire with the department to be sure? My letter says: "On behalf of the faculty in the Speech and Hearing Science Department at Portland State University, I extend my congratulations on your acceptance into our master's degree program in speech-language pathology." And then it goes on to say that we need to accept or decline by April 15th and then some other details. Hope this info helps!

Thanks so much Inny!!! I chose Portland just because their post-bac program is a non-competitive process, so basically everyone gets in and its easy to start. Plus it was close-ish to home and they have a great reputation- also cause I liked the city when I came to visit. It was all kind of random really but the program is better than I expected Hope we hear back from Canadian schools!

Just accepted to Portland State today!! Haven't seen many people discuss the program on this forum, so I started a new one. But does anyone have any insight into this program? Congrats to all !

So I just found out today that I got into PSU for the SLP masters! I'm so excited and so relieved. At the same time I'm still awaiting a few other schools to see what happens. Even though I'm currently attending PSU, I don't feel like I know enough about the graduate program. Does anyone have any insight? Are you all thinking of attending PSU also? Pros and cons? Lets get the discussion rolling

sooo I got into Portland State University where I'm doing my post-baccalaureate right now! So relieved, its my first acceptance! But still awaiting the Canadian schools eek!

If possible, could you please let me know too where you got admitted? I didn't realize any of the Canadian programs were already accepting people- I thought it was going to be much later in March and April 1st. Thanks

I think you have a really good chance! I know someone who finished the program 1 year ago who had around a 3.8 and same sort of experience as you. I also know someone who is currently in their second year of the program at UofA that had a 3.5 I think, so its hard to say what they are looking at and perhaps GRE scores and experience balance out GPA.

In general I've been told that they look at the GPA of pre-req courses separately because they feel these are good determiners of your success in the SLP program.

Thanks for starting this thread! There was an old one, but no one seems to be on it anymore. I've applied to UT, UWO, U of A, and McGill. I've also applied to a number of American schools as I'm currently in a post-bac program in the states. SO far, UT, UWO and U of A have all said April 1st is the date. Does anyone know about McGill?

Thanks! I was also told the same thing- that BU is contacting people this afternoon and tomorrow morning. So we shall see!

Thanks for starting a new thread- good idea! I applied to Boston U, MGH, Syracuse, Pacific U, Portland State, Minot State, Washington State, UW. I'm currently in a post bac program with a 3.91 GPA, but my undergrad GPA is low, only 3.04- GRE is decent at 306 and AW 4.0. But because of that low GPA, I decided to apply to a variety of schools- some are definitely long shots, but worth a try! So far, I've been called to be invited for an interview at Pacific U. I read that Boston U does interviews around Feb 22nd, so if I don't hear anything I'm pretty sure I can count them out :$ Anyone else apply to the schools I mentioned?

egad00 I totally agree with you- now that I am attending an American school doing a Post-Baccalaureate, I realize that the grading system is quite inflated in the states! Its not too difficult to get a 3.8 here, but way more difficult in Canada- so would be really helpful to see what kind of grades people are getting into Canada with. Have you heard much about the McGill, UWO, UT programs? I live on the West Coast so don't know anyone who has attended those school's for SLP.
-
I'm not totally sure about UofA- your GRE scores are really great so that may balance out the GPA! One girl I know had a 3.8 when she went in 2009- but apparently that was a higher GPA year. Another girl I know had a 3.6 when she got into the program in 2011 (cGPA of 3.4!). Remember that UofA is last 60 credits- so maybe your last 60 are higher than your cGPA?

Who's applying to Canadian schools this year?? I'm applying to UofA, UT, UWO and McGill (although that is probably highly unlikely). Would love to connect with others on the application experience and any advice you have! I only know people who became SLP's at UofA- does anyone know anything about the other schools? Good luck with applications

SLP/Communication Disorders Masters Applicants

Hi everyone! I haven't seen many Canadians posting on these. I'm from Vancouver, and going to be applying to both Canadian and American schools this Fall for Fall 2013 admissions. I am really nervous and don't know if I stand a chance. A bit about myself- I finished my BA in Psychology with a minor in Counseling and Human Development. My cumulative GPA is not great, only a 3.0. My last 60 credits are a bit better, about 3.4. I'm going to be beginning Portland State University's Post-Bac program in 2 weeks. I've volunteered in an SLP clinic working mainly with children for 1.5 years, done private "speech" tutoring (SLP recommended me to work on speech and lang activities with one of her clients), lots of varied volunteer experience (a lot with children), worked and planned summer camps for 5-9 year olds, lots of leadership/team management experiences. Took the GRE and got a 306 and 4.0 on writing. I have an idea of the competitiveness of the few Canadian programs, and they are looking for extremely high marks. However, I don't know many people who have attended schools for SLP in the states. I am looking for schools with strong clinical programs as that is my main interest. As well, I'm looking for the cheapest schools possible, tuition is SO expensive when coming from Canada! I am hoping that doing the post-bac will give me the opportunity to boost my last 60 credit GPA and prerequisite/post-bac GPA. I think I have great practical experiences and have done well at them, but unfortunately my grades on paper don't reflect this and I'm not sure how to convey that I am cut out for a masters program because I feel that when they see the 3.0 CGPA they will disregard my application. This will be my first time applying, so I'm trying to be realistic about the fact that even though I am applying to the US to increase my chances, its still very competitive so I may not get in. Any advice on my application and how to make it better would be much appreciated!! Do I stand a chance?? Any suggestions on the best schools for me to apply to? I don't want to put all my eggs in the Boston U/Rush/MGH, etc. basket as they seem extremely competitive from what I've read. I'd appreciate any suggestions -
I'm trying to weed through all of the Masters in Speech Pathology programs in the US and figure out which ones I would have the best chances of receiving some funding for tuition. Anyone have any suggestions?? Seems like some schools I've emailed like the University of Washington give out very few, and schools like the MGH Institute of Health Professionals said that most students receive between 25-100% of tuition costs in scholarships. As a Canadian going to school in the states is a good option for SLP but SO expensive. Any advice anyone has would be much appreciated
