I'm too lazy to quote. This thread is almost completely disheartening. As someone who identifies as LGBTQ, and as someone who did her honors thesis on social service disparities in the LGBTQ community, I cannot believe some of the words I am reading. Personally, if you are happy and getting the education you need and deserve, I am not one to judge if it is liberal or conservative. For me, I am currently at a large institution in a conservative state and feel unchallenged and not terribly optimistic about my job prospects after graduating. Which is why I chose to not apply locally for graduate school. My decision was probably based more on the state-wide issues rather than the issues I have at my university. I could say a lot more, but I'll close there.

MSW: Future Career in Veteran's Affairs
citychild replied to footballfan90's topic in Social Workers Forum
I don't know much about the schools you're applying to as it relates to veteran work... but one of the schools I'm applying to has a specific fellowship for students interested in working with military families. If such exists at any of the schools you've looked into, it may be something to consider. -
I have not heard from UW, but I also applied (early admission as well). I called them and they said the majority of responses should be sent out late Jan/early Feb--the first round of reviewing applications.
-
If start date is a factor for you, I know some of these may have odd start dates--particularly if you're advanced standing.
-
You can see where I applied to in my signature. The reasons for my applications are diverse... feel free to ask if you'd like to know. I completely understand what you mean by "draining" and I am so sorry you have had to experience things like that. I wish I knew what to say, but really, there is no excuse for such poor behavior...

I have noticed similar in my BSW program and it irritates me so much. I have been on the receiving end of some rather homophobic remarks from professors in the social work department during a social work class. As a result, I am leaving my university to attend graduate school. A lot is the surrounding community as well... I have noticed my neighborhood (I live near the campus but not on campus) is largely white and lacks diversity as well.
-
Outside of coursework, I highly recommend volunteering for an advocacy organization or similar in your community. While textbooks and classes are phenomenal, learning "real work application" has been enormously useful and has only further cemented my passion for macro social work.

@TLC - Yes, we use HudVash but I don't work for HudVash. And I echo what Dawn said, thank you for your service! -
Simmons MSW Program/ Admissions experiences
citychild replied to TLC's topic in Social Workers Forum
TLC I jsut wanted to say that I do a lot of the same work you do--advocating for homeless veterans. I was initially interested in Simmons until I found out they do not offer a macro track, therefore, disqualifying them from my search. Good luck to you, it really is a great school! If you'd like to ever chat, PM me. My agency just housed our 79th homeless veteran less than a week ago! -
Well, I officially accepted my admission to Loyola today. I was going to apply to UC but am pretty fond of the Jesuit education since I got to attend Fordham for a year (also Jesuit). Even if you're not attending Loyola, I'd love to network here. What are the cheapest ways to move? Are you buying anything ahead of time? Where are you looking to live? You get the idea...
-
Where are you applying? Applicants for 2013 =)
citychild replied to MSDubbs's topic in Social Workers Forum
I was told their admissions process has changed. Are you applying to advanced standing and are a BSW student now? -
I just got accepted to Loyola!
-
Not sure if this information is pertinent to your circumstance, but they changed the admission requirements for advanced standing. I had applied but now you have to submit your final internship evaluation from your senior year of your BSW. For those of us (like me) going immediately into graduate school from undergrad, this poses a challenge and I will no longer be pursuing my application there because it is not realistic to wait a year when I'm a strong candidate with lots of experience as it is. http://www.bu.edu/ssw/academics/advanced/
-
I completed my application about a month ago to Loyola and was informed I will be getting a postal letter response sometime this week. o_0 I'm so freaking nervous! Do people usually bite at the first acceptance?
-
I, as well, do not think MSW programs would think any less of you for having a small child. Honestly, I see it as a perk for wanting to better your life and your childs. Good luck!

From the Portland State tuition estimator (http://www.pdx.edu/bao/tuition-estimator), it looks like $6,745 per term. I'm guessing it would all even out to be between $16-18k. I'm not sure of their aid packages, but I did visit the campus and was impressed. SUNY is about $20k. SUNY and Portland are my top two choices. I applied to Loyola because I did a year at Fordham and I'm fond of the Jesuit education. Seattle because I admire their research. Boston because of their macro track. The likelihood of going to UW is low, even if admitted largely due to the cost of their program. If you're out of California, like your profile indicates, have you heard about WICHE? http://wiche.edu/wrgp
-
Yes. Completely. As you can see, I applied to a wide variety of schools in terms of locations and costs. I was going to apply to Salem State too, but I'm exhausted. Cost followed by location. I have a difficult time putting the two together sometimes. I may be able to find a cheaper school... but do I want to live in Kansas? Not me. If you like Kansas, go for it--but I hate driving so I have to calculate that into the formula too.

Is it ok to go to your undergrad school for your MSW?
citychild replied to BrettMoy's topic in Social Workers Forum
Just so you know, a lot of schools nationwide offer the advanced standing program to students that do not graduate from their university as an undergrad. In fact, that is what I am doing. As long as you obtain your BSW from a CSWE accredited university within a specified amount of time (usually 4-6 years), other universities generally will admit you advanced standing if you choose. I am applying to a school that is $5,000 cheaper for out-of-state than my in-state school. I am not telling you this to encourage you to leave your university if you are happy but more so to let you know there are options if you want them. Good luck in your undergraduate education! -

I don't think there is anything wrong with it either. I can say why I am not going to graduate school at my undergrad university: I am not happy. But more importantly, I plan to eventually pursue a PhD and I get the feedback from those who know me that I should look elsewhere. As long as you're happy--why fix what isn't broke? -
Uh, yea. I planned on submitting my apps as soon as I could in early October. However, I have had to go to two funerals this month and that kind of put a kink in those plans. I missed some deadlines. Now I feel confused as to what to do. I'm applying to PSU, UW Seattle, BU, and probably USC. This is a whirlwind of confusion!
-
My UW Seattle app is done. Just waiting on the recommenders to submit. Portland State will be done soon as I get all the transcripts in (bejeebus it's expensive... $15 per transcript at my current school).
-
I applied to UChicago, advanced standing. Their application was due yesterday for the advanced standing option and they required four references. Despite all my planning ahead (and them agreeing to writing references), warning my references of the upcoming deadline, sending reminders, etc... 2 of them did not submit in time. I'm crushed. On to the next round of applications this weekend.

dawn321: Thanks for your feedback. Yea, I am in AZ now where my girlfriend and I have no rights--at all. I was in ICU for 10 days at one point and she shares with me the struggles she had to see me. It appears I am applying to Portland State in Oregon, UW in Seattle, WA, UChicago, Columbia (only because their financial aid packages tend to be strong) and another in New York. Out of all those, I believe Illinois has the fewest rights. If you ever need feedback, feel free to shoot me a DM.

My first year of undergraduate was at a Jesuit university. Keep in mind, I was not a social work major at the time--however, it seemed the Jesuit university was more service oriented than my current (now social work) program. Personally, I value this and enjoyed that university enormously (however, it was not in Boston). Have you ever looked into Simmons?
