Just wondering what kind of applicant is best for Counseling Psychology PhD programs. What do they look for in an ideal applicant? Thanks!

What you think the adcoms are saying about your application
olayak replied to DeWinter's topic in Waiting it Out
I think they'll say "she dropped out of a previous doctoral program (for medical reasons), so she'll drop out of ours. She looks really great otherwise, but we can't take the risk". -
Psych Results Page Questions/Clarifications

I was wondering about the person who received the rejection from TC's human development program. Which subprogram in human development was that for? Was it for developmental psychology? Or another specialty? Has anyone heard from the TC developmental psych program? Thanks! -
So, I have a new conference poster and conference talk to add to my CV since I sent in my application. I contacted the POI at my first choice school and also asked to meet with her to discuss my application. (The school doesn't actually interview applicants!) So, was this a big mistake? Did I mess up my chances? I have never contacted this POI before, this was the first time. I'm pretty good at socializing in person, so I thought an informal interview could help my application. Also, I thought the updated CV was important. Now I'm freaking out because I'm worried that emailing was the wrong thing to do. Help!

Fall 2015 Developmental (or CLD) PhD Applicants
olayak replied to olayak's topic in Psychology Forum
Did you interview with the CLD subprogram? Or Human Development? Thanks! -
Has anyone heard from the CUNY graduate center about their application to the CLD (Cognition Language and Development) program? Or Have you heard from Columbia Teacher's College about the Developmental Psychology program? Did anyone receive an invitation to interview from either of them? Best of luck to all! Kathy

Did anyone hear from (Columbia) Teachers College Developmental Psych program? I was told that they were making decisions this week! Also, has anyone heard from the CUNY Graduate Center's CLD program? (Cognition, language and development) -
Hi, I already have a MSW from NYU and also a MSEd and I'm completing a MA in Animal Behavior (Biopsychology). I'm applying to doctoral programs in Social Work to start in Fall 2015. I have some (but limited) research experience (I'm hoping to publish next year, but that would be after applications are in) and I haven't worked in the mental health field since graduating with my MSW, although I did start my own non-profit last year and I've been working at that. I'm applying to doctoral programs at NYU and SUNY Albany. Any suggestions for other programs would be welcome. (I need to stay local, tho). Most programs require at least 2 years post-masters experience and I just don't have that. (I had to work at my small business and do the non-profit. I didn't get the chance to get another job. Previous to my MSW I was an elementary school teacher). So, what are my chances getting into a doctoral program without post MSW experience? Has anyone got into either the NYU or SUNY Albany program without experience? I'm looking for a PhD but I'm totally open to a DSW, too. Thanks!

Hi! And what are my chances? (long)
olayak replied to RiemannForBeginners's topic in Social Workers Forum
Hi, I have a MSW from NYU and I think you have a great chance of getting in there! They actually respect that you didn't complete your BA immediately, it shows that you have life experience. Don't worry about that part! You have great grades and I hope you have good GRE scores. You look like a good candidate, so don't worry! Btw, you should also consider the MSW program at Hunter College. It's a fraction of the price and it's actually one of the best programs around! (even tho I loved NYU, if I had to do it again I would go to Hunter). Good Luck! -
Someone also just posted a rejection. I still haven't heard either way.

I agree with another poster- check out Seligman and Positive Psychology at U Penn. He's amazing!

I haven't heard from any schools yet. I have started making plans based on not being accepted anywhere and i'm actually excited about the plans! I'm finishing my third masters and already have half a PhD (long story), so I've had a good run and maybe it's time I move on and stop trying to catch that elusive PhD.....

I've officially gained weight and alienated friends and family waiting for responses from the universities. I have now decided that they all lost my application. It's easier for me that way! Sigh. Is it April yet?!

True but they're a good starting place!

Nudged towards field based on demand? (Clinical vs. Quant)
olayak replied to hughjones's topic in Psychology Forum
I agree. Go quant and minor in clinical. Quant is more theoretical and, therefore, preferred for professors/researchers. -
Find a journal article of research that you're interested in. they usually say something about suggested future experiments to expand on their work. That's a good starting place. Build on the work that's already out there!

Has anyone heard back from Princeton or Cornell yet?
olayak replied to iwanttobelieve's topic in Psychology Forum
I believe that people on the wait list were not invited to interview. They've sent out some rejections, too, so perhaps you're on the waitlist. -
hahaha! That's awesome! Just like another poster I am binge eating cookies and chocolate and drinking lots of wine. this is true torture.
-
I'm losing my mind over this. I have heard nothing from any of the schools. I'm driving all my friends and family nuts. Is it April yet?!
-
I haven't heard anything either.
-
So odd, I have heard nothing from NYU or Princeton and when I called and emailed, each time they told me that I had to wait for an official letter - they wouldn't tell me my status via unofficial email or over the phone. I know that NYU had their interview weekend, but I have a MSW from NYU with a 3.9 GPA, I'm going to be so annoyed if I wasn't even waitlisted!

The two I'm worried about are Princeton Cognitive Psych and NYU Cognition and Perception (Psychology). Any news would be great.
-
I applied to cognitive psych I've seen some people get interview offers, so I don't know what my lack of an interview means. It could mean that I'm a top candidate, a wait-list candidate or completely rejected! All this waiting is getting to me. LOL.
