Has anyone completed an ETA while already attending a PhD program (or know someone who has)? If so, I'd very much appreciate it if you could message me regarding an issue related to that.
-
Thanks for replying! I saw those posts too. Like I said though, I'm asking about the ETA project, not the Study/Research Fulbright project. Since the project component isn't as essential to the overall ETA application as it is for someone applying to the Study/Research fellowship (you don't need institutional affiliation for the ETA like you do the S/R), I was imagining (hoping!) that there might be more flexibility for the ETA's smaller-scale project.

Has anyone with an ETA changed their proposed project idea, and/or do you know how feasible it is to do so? I've thought about a number of different projects in the seven months since I applied, and the ETA project definitely seems less circumscribed than that of the research grants. Basically, how does the process of enacting your project happen once in your country? I was never quite clear on this...

Also accepted for the Spain ETA. Wow, kind of in shock.

Hi all! I'm yet another lurker drawn out by a recommendation (Spain ETA) and the anxiety of waiting. I had a question: is there a place where the stipend by country/type of grant is stated? I'd like to have an idea of how much my partner and I might want to start putting aside now for any additional living expenses, should I receive the grant.

Can anyone give me suggestions on choosing schools?

John Hawkins at UC Davis does lots with typology–but surely you looked at his work when you applied? I agree that you don't have to get involved with psycholing at Davis if you don't want to. There is support for several other subfields there. -
I'm guessing you're applying to a UC, then. From what I understood of the way the two are set up, the Personal Statement is actually designed to be the venue for "passion"--I'd be careful about appearing overeager in your Statement of Purpose, which should be a more professionally written, highly detailed text outlining your plans for study at X school. What I was told about the UC personal statement, when I applied, was that it's meant to show your awareness of the power dynamics inherent to higher academic study and/or how your knowledge of/experience with those power structures plays out in your work/professional goals--basically to show that you are politically sensitive and aware. I'd be interested in hearing how others interpreted it, though.

Georgetown is big into discourse analysis, for sure.

UC Davis for sociocultural linguistics and translation issues.

I agree that messenger bags are the most stylish-without-trying-too-hard unisex style. I suggest looking around in vintage stores for a nice leather one, and waterproofing it with waterproofing spray. I think a simple, not overdesigned canvas backpack could be nice too (no offense to pears's Burton logos), a la this one (if you don't need to carry much stuff): https://baggu.com/shop/canvasbackpack/navy

Hi! I will be attending for linguistics. I'm also really excited to be able to bike everywhere, haha. Currently scouring Craigslist for places to live--kind of hard, since I'm not currently based in CA.

UC Davis! It's a less prestigious name/younger program, but the faculty were so welcoming (and so was the funding package). I'd be happy to go into depth about it with anyone who PMs me.
-
Just withdrew my name from candidacy at Georgetown. Hopefully that frees someone in Socio up (who's got the funds to attend...).

Hi all, So I just heard back from Davis about funding. They enthusiastically offered me a full ride. I'm waiting to hear back about funding from Georgetown, where I was accepted in early February. I'm guessing, based on talking to other potential cohorts, that I'm on some sort of waitlist for funding. I'm wondering how to ask GU when they plan on releasing funding info, while politely informing them of my other offer (if I should do so at all). Though Georgetown is my top pick, I realistically cannot attend without at least some funding, and the full ride offered by Davis (plus their enthusiasm) is very appealing. All help much appreciated in advance--I'm quite unsure here.

I'd send off a quick, informative email to all of your remaining programs with your updated phone number. That's not annoying, and I doubt they'd read it as such as long as you're professional about it.
-
Can anyone else speak to this? I'd like to email my remaining programs, but I really don't want to be annoying.
-
Thanks, moody and ladyling!
-
Can anyone else speak to negotiating funding? I was under the impression that it was expected, within reason, to discreetly mention other schools' offers/inquire as to the potential for more financial support. But the only knowledge I really have about negotiating funds is via my cousin's experience in law school, which is quite a different bag from linguistics doctoral programs (less contact with profs, higher volume of applicants and accepted students, etc.), so perhaps I'm totally off here.

Exactly... It disrupts your personal narrative! I have to step back and remind myself that my grad applications are not me. But it's hard.
-
Thanks, wug. I guess I'm suffering from a self-flagellating notion that if I were "good enough," I would have gotten into X school. But who can definitively say why anyone gets rejected? UT Austin was my "safety" for a number of reasons (I'm beginning to think that term doesn't apply in graduate applications, though) and my one admit so far, Georgetown, was the app I felt the worst about--I was even late submitting my transcripts. So who knows! I sure don't.
-
I've heard that the UCs very strongly favor California residents, especially with all their recent debt. Is this true? I would like it to be so, based upon my rejections thus far...
-
Funny, I've already heard back from four schools (three rejects and an admit). I think it just depends on the individual departments! But regardless, I'd like to echo Omnium's positive sentiment--no use worrying about something you can no longer do anything about. Channel that stress into something other than checking the results page twenty times a day (ahem...guilty party here)!

Blech, now that's three of us. Congrats to those who did get in!
