There are 2 from Minnesota now. Congrats to the "other" person!
-
One of my schools finally uploaded my GRE scores to their system. This score was sent over 2 months ago. ETS showed it received back in November. The deadline for the school was right at a month ago. Greeeat.

Oh, I applied to BU as well! It seems really competitive in admissions from what I've seen. Let me know if you hear anything, and I'll do the same.

I think UT-Austin will announce on Friday. For the last 2 (3?) years they have announced on the second or third Friday in January. Now, I'd love them to prove me wrong and send them out right now! Haha.
-
I hope so. I had a grad coordinator email me well before the deadline to let me know if I could get the rest of my application in (LORs), my file would go into review immediately. Of course, I'm not holding my breath for early results, but it would be lovely.
-
I see the first acceptance has been posted. Anyone want to claim it? Not for one of my schools, but congratulations!
-
Same situation as wmnshlthsoc and amlobo. We are waiting until offers go out before applying anywhere job-wise. We do plan to move in the very early summer to acclimate ourselves to the area, though.
-
Keeping things neurotic today by using Mapquest to determine which schools I can advertise to my parents as "not really moving that far away." If it's 10 hours or less from their house, it moves to the "you can drive that in a day! it's not that far! we aren't really moving!" list.

Try to find a program to enter for the fall. Deciding which 2 year program to enter into is the big question still for me.
-
Good riddance.

I dreamed that I won a "top 50 storytellers" medal at some conference for my statement of purpose. Not as good as an acceptance dream, but pretty hilarious regardless.
-
No, I totally dropped 2 schools off my list right before the deadlines (Indiana and WSU). Then, there is a third school that I've read some stories about. For admission purposes, I'll remain vague. However, let me put it this way: I'm not interested in taking 8 years to graduate, you know.

Sh*t people say when you are applying to grad school

Hahah. I've heard similar stories on here. One guy said a friend expressed jubilation over an acceptance to a Master's program (without funding) to "brand name" school, while showing disdain towards the fully funded PhD program that was similarly ranked without as much publicity. It's humorous. -
After perusing the results survey for both 2011 and 2012, most schools don't notify until late January and early February. Although, UT could notify any day now based on history.
-
No, this is probably common. Or at least I'd like to think we aren't totally insane. I have an Excel spreadsheet with a list of my schools and their notification dates for 2012 and 2011. Lol.
-
How many of you have heard something back yet?

I've heard from two schools about my application materials, essentially stating that they are reviewing my file and needed additional clarification on certain things. The application process is disadvantageous to women with maiden and married names on differing forms, especially in programs that don't provide a form for 'alternate names.' Anyhow, that's been the extent of it. Of course, the programs I applied to usually notify in late January to very early March. So, in reality I have another month to fret it out. -
I got something similar from BU - "We are pleased to acknowledge.." I almost died on the spot. and then I was like "nooooo!"
-
I made contact with another professor who got in touch with him. So, besides the 3 deadlines missed on 1/1, we're all good. All applications complete.
-
Well, I've emailed him twice now with updates/reminders sans reply. Seriously? I know everyone is busy and/or on break as well, but this has been open for over a month. I'm so flustered.
-
How unfavorably is this going to look? I feel sick. I knew one of my LORs is extremely busy, as he's the graduate coordinator at my undergrad (as well as his own research/teaching schedule right now). I asked anyway because 1. I thought he would get the letters in on time and 2. I know the letters will be great. He managed to meet all the December deadlines, but he missed every single January 1st deadline.. which does not bode well for the 15th deadlines either. I feel like I just wasted a ton of money and time on those applications. If he can't get the letter in on time, that's surely to reflect poorly on his attitude towards me.
-
I would only submit a sample done in ASA or APA style personally. That means 12 pt font, double spaced, etc.
-
I've only talked to one person about this, a department head. He said for his program, the writing sample essentially shows you can write well enough and how you can approach things sociologically (or critically if your paper isn't soc oriented). It's not so much about substance or content.. or even methods since that's stuff his program intends to teach you their way.
-
I'll do ranges since that's more comfortable for me. GPA: 3.5-3.75 Verbal: 160-164 Quant: 149-153 AW: 5.0-6.0 Finalized list: UT Austin IU Bloomington Brown Brandeis Vanderbilt WSU MSU NCSU BU Oregon

Yeah, stressed. Mostly resigned to rejections across the board, but then I remind myself I only need one acceptance.
