  1. Yeah I too noticed Madison's stingy stipend. Pretty brutal. Unless they have a ton of other opportunities for other funding through grants and so on, it would seem pretty difficult -- even for a grad student -- to live on that without going into a bit of debt.
  2. How's the funding at Hogwarts?
  3. I'm in a similar situation with my lease.
  4. For all my fellow suffering wait-listers, it just so happens that a total lunar eclipse is going to occur on April 15, 2014: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_2014_lunar_eclipse ...As if the deadline wasn't dramatic enough already!
  5. Get me in off the wait list at Arizona and you have yourself a (dubious) deal!
  6. Anyone else going to be at the Rocky Mountain Philosophy Conference at Boulder April 4-5?
  7. Before this post... Latest post in Rejection Thread by: 'Wait For It...'; Latest post in Waitlist thread by: 'kant_get_in'. Go figure!
  8. I was wondering about this, too. From talking to a couple of professors and from giving it some thought myself, my feeling is that that, unless you're right at the top of the wait list and so your chances of an offer are very high indeed, it's generally better to wait until you receive an offer to contact faculty with whom you'd like to work. But I could be wrong -- maybe it would even help your chances to go ahead and contact faculty while wait listed. Hard to tell. Some of it might depend on the specific context, consisting in factors such as whether you've contacted those faculty members *before* applying.
  9. Any philosopher who refutes one or more of my positions.
  10. Is this the point in the disagreement where I have to pretend to hold one of you back while that person says "Hold me back, bro!! Hold me back"?
  11. Yes, but Yale doesn't know that. ( I didn't apply. Sshhhh, don't tell them.)
  12. If I've received an offer, then I should post on the Acceptance Thread on TGC. Well, that conditional is true, since the antecedent is false
  13. Sounds like you still have a shot at USC. And even if you don't get in there, you have offers from UMass and Notre Dame! Not such a raw deal
  14. Do you know if there is a particular reason for UConn being the only department in the US -- or at least the only ranked department in the US -- which doesn't update most of its applicants by March 15th? So, why aren't any wait list notifications or any rejections given out by March 15th? As far as I can tell from the results page, only a couple offers have gone out. Seems as though several other people who also post on TGC and are applying to UConn are wondering the same thing.
  15. Sorry to hear that, but surely it's still early days. That was a solicited email, right?
  16. If Bob is wait listed at a school X, and Jane posts on TGC that she has declined an offer at X, then that gives Bob not false hope, not "utterly incomplete information", but rather *some* useful information and *some* legitimate hope. But I do, of course, agree that Bob shouldn't immediately assume he has 100% complete information now, or that he should be 100% confident that he will get an offer from X. Almost no one on this forum would do that, though.
  17. Good idea.
  18. What I have learned from the 2014 season, and would like to pass onto the 2015 applicants: If you get put on a wait list at one of your top picks, become as proficient as possible at staying active in your free time by reading and writing philosophy, exercising, socializing with friends/family/boyfriend or girlfriend, and maybe even getting a paper up to a high enough standard to submit to a good journal. Even if you think you have a strong chance at getting in off the, just assume you won't get in, and stay as active and ambitious as possible in the meantime. Bottom line: Waiting is torture. So don't wait. Do productive things instead.
  19. Arizona too?
  20. Congrats! They have a great placement record, last I checked. Hope you get in off the UNC wait list though

  22. Can anyone claim the University of Arizona offer (off the wait list, presumably), posted today?
