  1. It's time for some real gun control in this country.

  3. Annenberg? Yeah, what can I say, I didn't think the workers in the factory were content "to play the game" just because they were productive "making-out" without a more critical interview process. From then on it was all downhill...I should have dropped the course but pride and optimism got the better of me in that course. But is this worth time in a statement of purpose? Nah. You're in communications, the application process is largely a game to be played with ruthlessness. Show weakness in your app, and it's going to be exploited. Good luck to you.

  5. I'd at most address it in passing. Focus on your strengths. Just my two cents.
  6. You won't know what universities you can get into until you actually get into them first! People can make suggestions, but it's largely bullshit. Also, if you're just starting your hunt from a program this Fall for programs with deadlines that are in just 4 days. Well, good luck with that.
  7. DUUUUUUUUUDDDDEEEE IIIIIIIIIIIITTTTTT DOOOOOOOESSSSNNNNTTTTT REALLLY WORK THAT WAY
  8. Give it a shot! What's the worst that could happen! Also, there are a lot of IR people here: http://forum.thegradcafe.com/forum/11-government-affairs/
  9. I have slightly less than a 3.0 and one D from a sociology class where the professor just didn't like my political beliefs (slightly Marxist). I didn't address it all because frankly nothing comes off worse than whining/look weak IMHO. I would just aim for as strong an application as possible. I also think it helps to reminder that most reasonable people know that no one is perfect and that if they look perfect it's probably just too good to be true. Do your best on everything else and to hell with a low GPA!
  10. You're welcome. I mean like city/county/states employ psychologists for institutions like child services, mental health services, prisons, schools, healthcare etc - but it sounds like you're not really looking to *do psychology* (clinical psychology, psychiatric social work (LA County is hiring - habla espagnol? lol) but rather *to study* its application (program/policy analyst). I think you might get a lot more specifics about different think-tank/advocacy type organizations in the Social Work and Public Health boards. http://forum.thegradcafe.com/forum/59-public-health/ http://forum.thegradcafe.com/forum/65-social-work/ Good luck.
  11. I would say that this tends to be more of an area of study covered by sociology (criminology) than public policy. Just scanning briefly some schools seem to even offer specific degrees in criminology. I wouldn't be surprised if some schools had joint programs. http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-humanities-schools/criminology-rankings
  12. Well it sounds like to some extent you're already doing pubic policy unless I misunderstand what you mean by "health disparities." I would say that there's basically two types of public policy work: practicing (administration) and policy (think-tank). I wouldn't be too concerned that your degree is not in "public policy" in terms of job interviews. It would appear that you've decided that you don't want to enter the academic job market and want to be in some sort of service to the public. Internships in political offices/the White House etc. aren't really the way to get a job for someone with a PhD. Going based off of your apparent interest in "health disparities" it would seem that you might want to look at county and state social systems (and related advocacy organizations). I hope that was helpful. Welcome (this board needs more emoticons!)

  16. You sound like you would benefit from some time off from school to (A) Get more work experience and to ( Get more focused. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it getting just a wee bit late in the application cycle?

  22. Broadwell fell short of aims at Harvard Draws scrutiny at second college By Callum Borchers, Tracy Jan and Bryan Bender Globe Correspondent, Globe Staff / November 14, 2012 Paula Broadwell, the biographer with whom former CIA director David Petraeus had an extramarital affair, abandoned her bid for a doctorate from Harvard in 2007, failing to advance to PhD candidacy after four semesters at the Kennedy School of Government, and now faces the prospect of an ethical review at King’s College London, where she has resumed pursuit of a doctorate. The revelations about her mixed academic record add to the portrait of a principal figure in the Petraeus scandal who has refused to respond to multiple Globe requests for comment and hasn’t spoken publicly since disclosure of her relationship with Petraeus and his resignation as CIA chief. Broadwell left Harvard with a lesser diploma in 2008, a master of public administration, after one additional semester. She enrolled later that year as a PhD student in the war studies department of King’s College London, where her military leadership research focused largely on Petraeus, according to Broadwell’s profile on the school website. But four years on, Broadwell remains far from earning her degree, according to the department chairman, and her relationship with the subject of her research could jeopardize her progress toward a doctorate.
