I got $5k per semester too.  So glad finally to have the letter!

@mkern2 Are you sure yours is only for one year? That's how mine looks too, but then the last sentence says it will automatically be renewed so long as I meet all the basic requirements (12 credits, 3.0 GPA, etc.). So really, I'm counting it as $20k.

I was offered $4000k per semester, but I’m not planning on attending. Do y’all know if sending back the reply form declining the scholarship offer will reject my offer of admission, too? I’ve been trying to figure out how to do that for the past month with no luck.

Have you emailed them?

Has anyone successfully set up a tour and/or class observation?  I have been trying to schedule something with admissions, but am having difficulty...

I know you can email them gradtours@pitt.edu and hopefully they can coordinate with the SSW.

Anyone for sure attending? I wonder if so many people decline their offer, if they'll increase financial aid upon request?

I'm really close! They gave me 4k a semester and Columbia is the only other contender but 1) they haven't told me about FA yet and 2) they'd have to give me like 26k for it to be comparable.

I am visiting this coming week,  if I like it, I will attend.

Hey, does anyone have a guess whether it would be worth still applying, or should I wait until next year? My GPA is 3.5, BA in an unrelated field, not much experience... I thought I was done for this year, but then I got a surprise rejection and now I'm in full panic mode.

It absolutely cannot hurt to try! That’s a good GPA, and I bet you would have a good chance of getting in. The main issue would be scholarship, because you didn’t apply by the priority deadline. I think a scholarship would still be possible, but not guaranteed. I’ve read threads from 2015/2016 where people applying after the priority deadline still received scholarships.

Why not go for it?

Yeah, that's a good point. I'll look at old threads and see if I think it's worth it. If not, there's always next year! Thanks so much for responding.

I'd say go for it. There are people on this thread that are declining their offer, so it will free up some scholarship money.

Just got back home from visiting Pitt the past few days. I will definitely have to admit they did a good job trying to sell Pitt to me. I am still debating between Pitt & NYU though.

Yeah they also tried to sell me hard on their school too when I visited (& I fell for it)

youre also on the UW thread. Any word from them?

You accepted their offer? How did you feel when you visited? Where are you from if you don't mind me asking? And UW rejected me unfortunately, it was definitely a reach for me (especially being advanced standing).

Sorry, I was talking about when I applied first time to pitt. They were trying so hard to sell me on Pitt & I bought it (& honestly didn’t have anywhere better to go at the time). That’s how I ended up at Pitt for a year.

To be honest, I felt kind of trapped for Pitt. I didn’t have any other better schools to go to & they gave me a good scholarship so it was hard to turn down. They definitely practiced their pitch and all, I felt like. And I’m from California originally but did my undergrad in Seattle & currently live in Seattle. I did Pitt last year & moved back.

I’m still waiting to hear back from UW. I got in to Pitt again & got my old scholarship, but I’m not sure if I’m mentally ready for another year of Pitt. Again, nothing wrong with the school, but I was completely isolated. I don’t know if I’m ready for that again.

If I don’t get into UW my plan is probably going to hold off on graduate school for a while. /:

I can absolutely see how that happened to you! The school is nice but the city itself is kind of tough.

Hey all, quick question - I saw in an admissions brochure that you have to have at least 30 credits in the social sciences to apply. I have like 9, at best, and I was wondering how stringent this requirement is? I didn’t see it on the website so it hit me kind of out of left field and now I’m nervous that I don’t meet their admission requirements. ?

It is highly unlikely you only have 9. Most undergrad degrees usually require at least 30 social science GenEd courses. Are you sure? I added a list below from Pitt's GenEd section.

These are most common social science course.

Africana Studies (social sciences-related courses)
Anthropology (social sciences-related courses)
Economics
Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies (social sciences-related courses)
History
Jewish Studies
Legal Studies
Political Science
Psychology (social sciences-related courses)
Religious Studies (social sciences-related courses)
Sociology

Hey, thanks for responding! The Gen Ed requirements for my program were pretty weird and although they covered some of that kind of material, I’m not at all sure that that would be obvious from just looking at the course titles. I’m probably just gonna have to email or call Pitt about it, but thanks so much for going to this effort! I didn’t think of checking out the Gen Ed requirements for Pitt but I will definitely do that now.

Hey, I didn’t want to say it on this thread because it’s a very small program and I don’t want to give out too much personally identifiable info on here, but I PM’d you in case you were curious!

  • 1 month later...

Quick question for those who have committed to Pitt - when did you have to register for classes? I’m looking at the requirements to qualify for in-state tuition (I’m thinking of applying for Fall of 2019) and it says that you have to have lived in Pennsylvania for at least a year by the time you register for classes. Just wondering because my partner and I are trying to move to Pittsburgh by August, but if you have to register for classes in May, for example, then there would be no point in rushing.
