Mathētēs Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 Does anyone know how many applicants Duke usually wait lists for their MTS program? I counted two on the Results page, and one of those is mine. A Results post says that the person received a letter. Have others received MTS decision letters from Duke?
Musili Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 And now it gets complicated. In addition getting into Harvard's MTS (with what turns out to be full tuition), I was also admitted to NYU's religious studies MA with a concentration the cross-departmental Journalism + Religion program (which is what I do, basically). They also offered me 1/2 tuition for the full degree. It came as a complete surprise to me because they say right on their website that they don't have funding for students in this program. So, in my head, I had basically ruled it out as a realistic possibility once I got Harvard's offer... until now. I received a really nice email from the director congratulating me and explaining that it's a token of how much they want me there.

I'm assuming I will get a poor funding offer, and if thats the case I won't be attending.
11Q13 Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 Anyone have any input on my questions before I make a complete ass of myself? I'm requesting more funding, do you guys think it's bad form to name the other schools I got into and funding offers (Vandys I'm hoping should basically be a full ride after need-based grant)? Attending really wont be feasible unless I get more so there is a lot riding on it. Who should I email my funding request to? The dean, the financial aid department, both?

I would email whoever sent you your letter of acceptance, with the name of the school and the funding offer (since they'll need to know that in order to ask the school for more money anyway), and just be polite. If you make it clear that you're asking because it's not financially feasible for you to attend right now, they shouldn't take offense.
Musili Posted March 21, 2010 Posted March 21, 2010 I saw your post on the results page--I'd love to do that program at NYU! It's a fascinating program and very nearly a dual degree. The work is split down the middle w/ religion and journalism. I think if the funding offer were more comparable I'd be jumping on this, but as it stands, my two options are pretty much neck in neck.

Wow, the option to work in that type of atmosphere sounds very difficult to pass up, and I really hope you're able to get more funding for it. Best of luck with your decision!
Isobel_Mishima Posted March 21, 2010 Posted March 21, 2010 So, finances being about equal for both programs - Chicago or Harvard for Philosophy of Religion? (also, turning down Yale - hope that helps!)
divinity888 Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 Isobel, can I ask why you're eliminating Yale from your choices? I'm making a hard decision myself right now and I'm interested in everyone's thought processes.
Giraffe40 Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 I can't decide where to go! If anyone has input, I'd love to hear (maybe PM me so as not to take over the board). My focus is Early Christianity and New Testament, and I think my three finalists are Duke, Harvard and Notre Dame.

I'm making a hard decision myself right now and I'm interested in everyone's thought processes. I know that a few years ago they thought about closing their religious philosophy stream, and only have theology. I think this is indicative of their attitude towards religious philosophy which tends to be more theological and conservative (think Barth, Aquinas, etc.). They also seem stronger in early Christian philosophy, and my interests are more 19th century.
LateAntique Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 Accepted off the waitlist this afternoon to Notre Dame's Early Christian Studies MA. Full funding + stipend. I'm absolutely going to accept this!

LateAntique Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 Thanks to everyone. I'm elated. I cannot believe I'm going to get to study with people like Brian Daley, John Cavadini, Blake Leyerle, and a host of others. What an opportunity. Best of luck to everyone who is waiting to hear back. Also, I don't think anyone here is waiting on FSU, but I turned down a fully-funded offer with a stipend from them, so hopefully that lands in someone else's lap.
