  1. 1. BA (Liberal Arts): Graduated from a college with no grades or tests, so no GPA. Very, very strong narrative evaluations. I did complete one semester at Harvard College and had a 3.6 from that. 640V/590Q/6A on GRE. Letters of rec from well-respected people for both the programs that accepted me. 2. Accepted: Harvard Divinity: MTS; NYU MA - Religion and Journalism (both programs offered full funding, more or less) 3. Waitlisted: none. Rejected: UMN and Brown, for non-religion PhD programs, which were HUGE longshots.

    NYU

I'll be attending - Religion with a Journo concentration!

    Offer Accepted

I was offered a substantial increase in funding from NYU after telling NYU that I would accept Harvard's offer based on their better funding package. And so I'm happy to say that I accepted the offer to NYU for an MA in Religious Studies with a concentration in Journalism. I am VERY excited. Also, put me down as a case of "ask, and ye shall receive."
  4. Good for you! Sounds like you made a really interesting choice for yourself. I have just made a similarly difficult choice, myself, between a very prestigious program that I know I'd love, and a riskier, but more exciting and innovative, program. Like you, it felt like choosing an identity, and like you, I went with the latter. Also, Boston is FANTASTIC.

    Harvard??

You should see a TON of listings on craigslist in May... when people are trying to sublet the remainder of their leases, etc. And Harvard has some good resources for finding cheap places to live, as you know. I may be at HDS. I still have a few days to decide!
  6. It's a fascinating program and very nearly a dual degree. The work is split down the middle w/ religion and journalism. I think if the funding offer were more comparable I'd be jumping on this, but as it stands, my two options are pretty much neck in neck.
  7. And now it gets complicated. In addition getting into Harvard's MTS (with what turns out to be full tuition), I was also admitted to NYU's religious studies MA with a concentration the cross-departmental Journalism + Religion program (which is what I do, basically). They also offered me 1/2 tuition for the full degree. It came as a complete surprise to me because they say right on their website that they don't have funding for students in this program. So, in my head, I had basically ruled it out as a realistic possibility once I got Harvard's offer... until now. I received a really nice email from the director congratulating me and explaining that it's a token of how much they want me there.

    Storrs, CT

Too late for Michalis, but... Willimantic is patchy, but eccentric and kind of fun. If you can visit in person, you'll be able to judge the neighborhood for yourself. If you're picking apartments from afar, then maybe it's not the best place to look. But... if you're artsy, it's a MUCH better option than Vernon or Manchester.
  9. I second the Davis Square tip. I lived there while doing an internship and it's a great little area. Less expensive, too. Inman square in Somerville is also close by, doesn't have a T-stop, but is about 15 minutes away from the Harvard campus by foot. In any case, I'm looking at Somerville and maybe Lower Allston. I've had good luck on Craigslist the 2x I've looked in the Boston area, but not until April/May or so. Here's my apartment plan: my younger brother likely will have a summer internship in Boston with a small stipend. So in April/May we'll look at places that either want someone for a year starting in June, or places that need someone to take over the end of the lease and then, preferably, sign on for a full year in the fall. And then we'll take the place for the full term. ---- I am rather certain I'll end up at Harvard Div. I'm still waiting on one decision, but if I get in I don't think there's funding for me anyway...
  10. I'm planning on going. Was accepted for the MTS in a self-designed area of focus. I actually did a semester of research at Harvard for my undergraduate work and took a couple Div school classes, but I'd love to meet some potential classmates. I'm close by, about 2 hours away, so I'm not quite decided on when I'll be arriving.
  11. I thanked them after the process was over, and updated all three of them via email (w/a thank you) upon my first acceptance, especially since one of them is an alum of the program. Once my decision is made I'll write them a snail mail note containing that information and thanking them again. I went to a small college. Had I gone to a larger one, I may not have had so much contact with them.
  12. Accepted to Harvard Divinity MTS with 1/2 tuition.
  13. I will follow up on my previous post in haiku: I checked the website Expected: I'm rejected Time for some bourbon
  14. I checked mine. Nothing. Note: I am a likely rejection, so this probably means that all rejections have not gone out, either. I proposed a course of study that involved both nonfiction writing (MFA) AND the study of American Christianity in Literature (PhD), and I was rejected from the MFA program. So while it would be a very pleasant surprise to be accepted into the PhD program (and not something I'd rule out at all), I am very much in doubt of it. When I spoke to the department at the beginning of February they said acceptances and wait lists would go out first, and THEN rejections. But they also said the acceptances would go out March 1 or so, and the rejections by March 10, so maybe the plan changed.
  15. I do American religion and non-fiction writing, so I applied to four very different programs. The two religion ones? MTS at Harvard and an MA in Journalism & Religion at NYU. Still waiting to hear from both. From what I understand, I could hear from NYU any time between now and the end of March. Harvard sent my application to committee on Feb 24, as I think they did most MTS applications. I'm expecting to hear around March 15 for that. Although I have some heavy-hitting recommendations for both programs, I'm not expecting admission to either, as they're both really competitive, and I proposed a self-designed course of study for Harvard. We shall see. Certainly not giving up hope over here.
  16. That video features a character from a show called Black Books. It's generally a wonderful show for bitter/disappointed smart people. The main character owns a book store. It's on Hulu for free. Not that I've been drowning my sorrows in the entire first season or anything.
  17. While we're sharing... Here's one of my favorites on rejection:
  18. Interesting. I'm going to have to follow up with them. The Grad School has combined my two applications so that I only have one PIN (the one for the PhD application), but since the nonfiction decisions have already been made, I'll send an email now and report back if I hear anything.
  19. Here's what I know about U MN: They have this posted on their website - "We received a record number of applications to the MFA program this year: 443 applications for 13 seats in fall 2010. Applications are now under review. Applicants will be notified in mid-March." What I was told, when I inquired at the beginning of February, was this: They hadn't found out their budget yet for Fall 2010, and thus, realistically, there weren't any decisions made. Once that happens (I assume it's happened already), they'll try to get all decisions ready by around March 1, and those accepted or waitlisted will probably get an email. The Graduate School will send out official decisions by March 10. I am applying for both the PhD and the MFA (in non-fiction), so I'm honestly not sure if my application will be handled differently from yours.
