  1. Today I accepted ND's offer for the CJA program. I presume that this might free up an NT spot at both Duke and Yale, if anyone's hanging around on their waitlists.
  2. There's an outside possibility for you. I think they interviewed 9 people for 4 spots. I know of at least three that are considering good offers elsewhere. Again, not good odds, but not impossible.
  3. I'd be happy to hear it, but I was told that Wednesday and Thursday would be the notification days.
  4. I think that the one posted Monday was a fake; I heard that the admissions committee didn't even meet till Tuesday. I know that Call Me Ishmael interviewed with Yale, so I trust his acceptance, which would make for two this year.
  5. I'm the one who posted the result for Yale NT - I also got a call from Dale Martin around the same time. Congratulations, Ishmael!
  6. A few that I know: Baylor: $16K-$22K Notre Dame: $17.5K Duke: $20.5K Yale: $26K Some of these may have a higher range with additional department and school scholarships.
  7. I Skype interviewed this morning with Chicago for Bible this morning, and I see that someone else has received an unofficial acceptance today - I appear to have been weighed in the balance and found wanting. Congrats to the acceptee!
  8. I just returned from Baylor's preview weekend. I'm not sure that I'll end up there - it's a good fit, but not a perfect one - but I did want to give the program a plug. I was quite impressed with both their faculty and their NT students, and their stipend to cost of living ratio for qualified students is probably better than any other school's (outside of ND's top scholarships). If anyone's scoping out places to apply for NT in the future, definitely give them a look.
  9. Which subfield did you apply to? If it was NT or Early Christianity, I would assume that you are on their waitlist.
  10. If you're applying to the NT program, I do think that they've probably at least contacted all their interviewees. I think that ND's committee is meeting this week, though I don't know when they'll actually contact people. Good luck!
  11. I had a Skype interview with Yale today. I'm not sure how it went; it was pretty short, and I think I displayed neither brilliance nor stupidity. The final decision is supposed be made in late February.
  12. Thanks! I'm interested in text criticism, Greco-Roman context of the NT and the relation of theological exegesis with historical-critical approaches.
  13. Just got an invitation to interview weekend at Baylor, Feb 10-12. Am quite excited, and wonder why all the schools can't be this prompt!
  14. Just got the last application submitted. There is now absolutely nothing I can do over the next two months to increase my chances of getting in...quite a relief, actually!
  15. Just got the third of my five applications sent off. Should have the last two out this weekend, then just sit around for two months! I'm told that this is the worst two months of an entire academic career. I'm (perhaps foolishly) more excited than scared, though. Come quickly, acceptance letters!
  16. I usually feel ok about my chances until I think nationally. Most of the programs I'm applying to will accept one person in my subfield; do I really think I'm the single most promising NT student IN THE NATION?! I often don't feel like the most promising NT student in any given Taco Bell. Yet, ignoring the presumption, I push on.
  17. To be honest, the immediate financial future is more on my mind than the long term prospects. I would go to a second tier school with reasonable funding before I would attend a poorly funded top tier program. Thankfully, at the PhD level, program strength and funding seem to correlate well enough. As far as the long term prospects go, I'm pretty unconcerned. If the nice tenure-track positions don't work out, private high schools might be an attractive option. If teaching doesn't work out at all, I'll just finally get a real job like the rest of the world and read Greek in the evenings. Academia is such a imprudent career choice that once I started on this track, I just stopped worrying about it.
  18. That sounds like a great idea, but it's way more organized than what I'm doing. I'm hoping that I've made a strong enough impression on my recommenders that they can write about me without much prompting. I've also been told that I can ask them to mention specific points, but for some odd reason that feels too intrusive.

    Offer Accepted

I accepted Notre Dame's informal offer without hesitation.
  20. Accepted to Notre Dame's MA in Early Christian Studies! This is by far my top choice, and I accepted within 5 minutes of receiving the email.
  21. Congratulations! I'm especially excited because this makes me number one on the waitlist..
