So, I'm preparing to send off thank you cards for letter of recommendation writers this past season and also wanted to send each of my recommenders a modest gift to express my thankfulness for all the time that they sunk into my application. I was considering doing a restaurant gift certificate; albeit, I am quite far from my college now and don't have the ability to get gift cards for somewhere good and local. My parents also had recommended fine liquor, albeit I do not know if this is faux pas. Would anyone have any recommendations for thank you gifts?

If you know them well - a personal gift was nice.

I had one professor who's a tea fanatic, so I got him some special tea.
I gave a supernice bookstamp for another person because I knew he'd really appreciate it (which he did).
The third one I just bought him some coupons for good coffee nearby his faculty since he's always complaining the coffeemachines are the worst.

All were very happy with their personalized gifts.

I love those ideas!

I feel like I am not close enough with my profs to get personal gifts, but I am not sure... How weird would it be for me to do it anyway?

I’ve been out of school for a few years, and several of my letter writers were colleagues, so I bought them each a nice business card holder. It was less than $10 per person, and it’s something everyone can use.

Coupons for a good coffee is generally a good idea I'm under the impression (academics love coffee lol). Another good one is to add a handwritten thank you note.

One of my letter writers got really into the health craze, so I gave healthy snacks.

Another one is low key alcoholic(joking.. maybe. They just love drinking), so I gave a special bottle of some spirit.

Another one I bought food and had it delivered for their group meeting.

All with handwritten cards stating specifically how they helped me develop and what it meant to me. I’ve had a good relationship with everyone(even you - joke) and discussed things whenever I could.

This is such a great idea.

I sent out handwritten thank you cards that I put some time and thought into.

I'm currently deciding between two schools, and once I commit, I plan on buying a piece of school swag to give to them along with some other personalized gift based on what I know they like/inside jokes/etc. Nothing too large or expensive -- just thoughtful and specific. I'll be delivering in person to two recommenders and mailing to the third.
