Brown Data Science and Com Sci

Hello hello.

Thought I would go ahead and start a thread for everyone planning on attending either Brown's DS or CS program starting Fall 2018. I'm down to start a groupchat if we get enough people.

Might be worth looking into group housing, as well. There's some pretty nice places around the college.

I highly doubt everyone who hasn't heard back is rejected. Their deadline is March 15th, and most people last year heard back 27th-29th of March. Maybe they just accepted "priority" applicants early? Also, only two people (including myself) have posted admittances. Last year like 10-ish people did. Moreover, there is no doubt more people applied this year than last (as last year was their first ever cohort), so I expect a larger number of people to eventually post their acceptances.

To OP, when did you apply?

What's up guys!?  I'm a stats / comsci from a  top 10 and I just got in a little while ago for CS. Thought I'd do a little connecting.

At OP, PM the group chat number. Also, where were you guys thinking of living (on or off campus / how far away)? I'm with you...it would be pretty sick if we had a CS / DS house.

Congrats on the acceptance! Yeah, I actually have no idea about housing. I’m pretty sure they don’t offer on-campus housing, but from looking on craigslist there seems to be a fair amount of decent places around the school. I’ve seen a few full out houses that would be like $500 each if we get 4-ish people.

@AnAndroid

Congratulations on getting in!

I can't really speak for the CS masters program, but their CS department in general seems to be pretty top notch. Pretty small class size + well known professors + perfect course layout (for DS, at least).

Even from looking at the highly skewed info on grad cafe (as people are far more likely to post acceptances than rejections), I would say yes: the CS program is pretty dang selective. Look at some of the guys who got rejected lol…a lot of them have crazy good resumes. Getting in is definitely an accomplishment. As for job prospects, just look at the national data for people with masters in com sci: 90k average out of grad school, 120k average mid-career. I would also imagine going to an Ivy would put you above the average. I know for their DS program we have an opportunity to work with an industry partner for our capstone (maybe the CS program does something similar?).

I think you can assume that, if you do well, getting into a top PhD program shouldn’t be an issue. It's definitely a highly respected MS program. You could also carouse LinkedIn to see where the masters students end up…I might do that later if I get the time.

@qwertyq

Gratz on the admittance! I think you're the only other DS guy on here so far.

Yeah, definitely let me know what they say. I haven't accepted the offer yet, but I plan on doing so within the next couple or days (just getting some financial stuff leveled out).

As with everyone else, feel free to pm your # if you want to be put in the group chat,
