slp2be2018 Posted August 14, 2018 Posted August 14, 2018 I’m taking notes on the notability app and am questioning whether I would get into trouble if I recorded lectures for me to be able to review later on. I know one of my professors in the past was angry with one of my classmates for recording the lecture and sending it to another classmate, so if I asked her I’m pretty certain she’d say no. I’m not sure if it’s worth the risk, or would even be beneficial to have these lectures recorded but I thought I’d ask for someone’s experiences/advice about it!

I think most professors do not mind if someone records them. Maybe the professor you mentioned was angry because the recording was shared with another classmate, because she thought people will skip class and only use the recording. The worst they can say is no, and I think they would appreciate that you came to ask them first anyway. I recorded lectures in the past and never went back to listen to them. For me it's really easy to glaze over while listening to a recording of a lecture and in the end I found taking notes during class was best. I wasn't able to actively listen so that I could retain the information. Recordings might be good as a secondary tool though. Edited August 15, 2018 by Southwestspeechie slp2be2018 1

I also wanted to look into recording lectures to reference back on. Do you know how far you have to sit from the professor with notability? I do not have any experience using an app like this so any info you can provide would be useful. Also if anyone else has any free apps that would be great as well!
slp2be2018 Posted August 16, 2018 Author Posted August 16, 2018 It seems to record very well using an iPad and notability! I could hear very clearly.
Rorororosy Posted August 16, 2018 Posted August 16, 2018 I recorded lectures on my mac and didn't ask for permission. I also didn't share them with anyone
Swishfish22 Posted August 16, 2018 Posted August 16, 2018 I recorded the lectures for classes that I felt like I lost focus easily in. I would play the lectures back when I would be folding laundry or getting ready in the morning kind of like a podcast. I never asked professors about recording lectures unless it was explicitly stated not to. I just used an app called “Voice Recorder” with an icon that looks like a tape recorder.
slp2be2018 Posted August 16, 2018 Author Posted August 16, 2018 My professor outwardly said on the first day NO recording. So that answered my question ?.
miss_liza_ann Posted August 16, 2018 Posted August 16, 2018 Some professors on the first day specifically say no recording lectures. Some are fine with it. I still recorded lectures, but I had accommodations with my school's Disability Services office.
