Hi all, Does anyone know of any speech grad programs with an emphasis or track for working on literacy/reading? I know of MGH, Vanderbilt, U of South Carolina and possibly Emerson. I'm open to programs anywhere around the country. Looking for any programs that might have classes in or research opportunities specifically devoted literacy. Any insight you could give me about other programs that might be up my alley would be a great help!

Thank you, I'll check it out! Do you know anything about that program? Looks like you're applying there- what did you like so much about UNH's program?

I went there for undergrad, and it was a solid program! I really appreciate the location, and most of the professors were good. I also like the opportunities for clinicals (on and off campus) and the variety of tracks and classes they have, as well as research opportunities.

Thanks, AlwaysaFalcon. I'll check it out!

Does anyone have any personal experience with MGH IHP, Emerson, or Vanderbilt as an applicant or grad student? It would be great to hear how anyone feels about these programs!

University of Tennessee (UTHSC Knoxville)

There isn't a track, but Dr McCarthy does a lot with literacy.  She oversees a nice grant for AAC & Literacy, and deaf/HOH & Literacy.

Just want to throw it out there that depending on your work setting you may not get any hands on literacy work unless you choose to work as a education specialist not an SLP.  It of course might be completely different in private practice.

But as a school based SLP you’re doing artic, stuttering, aac, voice and language goals.  You may support by creating a literacy rich environment in speech but someone else will be working on the actual literacy learning.

It could be cool to learn about though!
