cnice98 Posted December 17, 2019 Posted December 17, 2019 (edited) On my GRE, I got average, not amazing, verbal (155) and quant (155) scores. I was shocked when I got my writing score back and it was a 3.5. I don't believe I have time to retake it since my grad apps are due January 15. I spent so long studying and paid so much money for prep programs/taking the test and I want to just move forward with my life. I'm really sad because I know this will make my application less competitive and take away a lot of funding opportunities. How much do slp schools care about the writing score? Should I even apply to schools that have a minimum writing score of a 4.0? Can I redeem my embarrassing writing score with an awesome personal statement? I'm confident in my GPA (3.85) and my experience. Please help!! Edited December 17, 2019 by cnice98
estel Posted December 17, 2019 Posted December 17, 2019 I'm also applying this cycle so I'm not pretending like I know a ton about this, but from what I've heard, it seems like most schools just want to see that you have a sum of 300 between verbal and writing, which you exceed! Since schools get a writing sample via your personal statement, I think you'll be totally fine with your writing score. I don't think you would have time to improve your score again before the deadlines, so I think you should just focus on writing really strong personal statements! Some schools don't even require the GRE (there's a thread elsewhere here) so you could look into a couple of those if you're really worried. I feel like schools will recognize that it's one test, though, and GRE writing is very different than grad school writing, so I wouldn't worry too much about it
cnice98 Posted December 17, 2019 Author Posted December 17, 2019 Thank you so much for your feedback. I wish you the best with your application process!
Queene92 Posted December 17, 2019 Posted December 17, 2019 I’m applying this cycle to. Are those scores really that low? the instructor in my GRE class said those are great scores. Especially for SLP
cnice98 Posted December 17, 2019 Author Posted December 17, 2019 Thank you for your input! I'm happy with my verbal and quant scores, but nervous about my writing score because some schools have a 4.0 minimum score.
2ls Posted December 18, 2019 Posted December 18, 2019 Unless schools list a minimum AW score you should apply. If they list an AW score I would call the program before spending the time and money on the application. cnice98 1
